About the Author

Ding-Geng (Din) Chen, Ph.D., is a professor at the University of Rochester Medical Center. Dr. Chen has vast experience in biostatistical research and clinical trial development and methodology. He has authored or co-authored more than 100 journal publications on biostatistical methodologies and applications. He is also the co-author (with Dr. Peace) of Clinical Trial Methodology and Clinical Trial Data Analysis Using R and a co-editor (with Drs. Sun and Peace) of Interval-Censored Time-to-Event Data: Methods and Applications. He is a member of the American Statistical Association, chair for the STAT section of the American Public Health Association, an associate editor of the Journal of Statistical Computation and Simulation, and an editorial board member of several other journals.

Karl E. Peace, Ph.D., is the Georgia Cancer Coalition Distinguished Cancer Scholar, senior research scientist, and professor of biostatistics in the Jiann-Ping Hsu College of Public Health at Georgia Southern University. He is also an adjunct professor of biostatistics at the VCU School of Medicine. Dr. Peace is a reviewer or editor of several journals, the founding editor of the Journal of Biopharmaceutical Statistics, and a fellow of the American Statistical Association. He has authored or co-authored over 150 articles and 10 books. He has received numerous awards, including the University System of Georgia Board of Regents’ Alumni Hall of Fame Award, the First President’s Medal for outstanding contributions to Georgia Southern University, and distinguished meritorious service awards from the American Public Health Association and other organizations. In 2012, the American Statistical Association created the Karl E. Peace Award for Outstanding Statistical Contributions for the Betterment of Society.

I highly recommend this book to anyone doing meta-analysis in general, and meta-analysis with R, in particular. The book brings you up to speed quickly and the examples are relevant to actual research. Using R for meta-analysis in this book is like "standing on the shoulders of giants" as one does their work on meta-analysis.

Wonderful for any Lego fan!

I have an 8 year old boy, therefore I have a plethora of Legos in my house. While he used to build and then never touch again, recently he has become more adventurous and wants to build the set then take it apart and see what else he can do.

We have the Lego Idea Book and a few other hardback, beautiful Lego books around the house that have been well loved and well used. This new LEGO Awesome Ideas book is full of EVEN MORE fantastic ideas. It is split into five categories: Outer Space, Modern Metropolis, The Wild West, Fantasy Land and The Real World. You can even learn how to build a LEGO world from scratch using the themed worlds section.

A great gift for any Lego enthusiast, it is packed with projects, although there is a need to have a well rounded Lego collection in order to make many of the items. Not a problem for us, but might be for someone just starting on their Lego journey. The photos are lovely, the sections well put together and the instructions are easy to understand, at least they are for my son.

A great buy.

This was purchased as a Christmas gift for my 7-year-old. He has buckets of Legos, like many kids his age, and we wanted to breathe fresh life into them for him.

This book has hundreds of pages of ideas. While it doesn't have the same detailed instructions that come with a Lego kit, it shows enough detail that they can be built by anyone who has the correct pieces in their collection. The pages are full-color and have little bits of the signature Lego humor throughout. My son has spent hours poring over it, planning which thing he is going to make next.

The book itself is a heavy-duty hardcover binding. The outside of the front cover is fun; it's made so that the images appear to be moving when you move the cover back and forth. The paper of the book is high-quality, and the binding is solid. This book will stand up to being manhandled by kids, which is important considering the target audience.

Overall, if you have a Lego fanatic in your household (like I do), I can wholeheartedly recommend this book. It has really gotten my son's wheels turning.

Really Awesome!

I am an AFOL (Adult Fan of Lego) and while I started buying sets for my daughter (Lego Friends mostly), I have been collecting sets for a few years now for myself. While I like to keep most of my sets intact to rebuild, I find that this book has introduced me into thinking about building in a different way. Some of the negative reviewers state that there are many "special" bricks that won't be in the average collection. That is true...but I would never have thought to buy Mixels or Technic sets before. This is my favourite of the Idea books and while I won't rush to source all the elements I don't have, I am enjoying trying out some of the ideas in the book.
I waited until it was on sale before I bought it, but to me it was worth it. The photos are fantastic and detailed, and there are showstopper builds at the end of each chapter which really showcases what can be done with a simple brick and unlimited imagination.
A great addition to a Lego Library.

Both agree that the book should be regarded as a tribute to a generation of fighting men, where sons often followed in the footsteps of their fathers, serving in the same units a generation apart.

Though South Africa’s ‘Border War’ started slowly with the first major clash of the conflict taking place on South West African soil at Omugulugwombashe in August 1966, hostilities escalated steadily, to the point where Moscow provided the Marxist Luanda government with all the military hardware it needed. Tens of thousands of Cuban troops were drafted into Angola after Portugal had abandoned its African territories.

Luanda by then had already used chemical weapons on a limited scale and Pretoria was considering deploying its newly developed nuclear arsenal.

Willem Steenkamp, a seasoned war correspondent, covers all these historical issues in South Africa’s Border War, as well as ancillary military strikes in several other black African countries that included Zambia and Mozambique.

About the Author
Al J. Venter has been an international war correspondent for nearly thirty years, primarily for the Jane s Information Group. He has also produced documentary television films on subjects from the wars in Africa and Afghanistan to sharkhunting off the Cape of Good Hope. Among his previous works are The Iraqi War Debrief: Why Saddam Hussein Was Toppled and Iran s Nuclear Option: Tehran s Quest for the Atomic Bomb. A native of South Africa, he is currently resident in the United Kingdom.

The truth about th war in Southern Africa

This is one of the best books ever written on South Africa's military involvement in Southern Africa. It reveals more about the battles fought by South Africa's army, than most people are aware of. It has an indepth coverage from 1966 to 1989. Along with special sections on relevant military units like The South African "Recces" special forces, and 32 batalion both renown for their abilities in battle. There are also sections on the political decision making taking place, amongst various relevant parties. The numerous photos that can be seen throughout the book are very impressive in what they convey. In essence what it was like to be there. The South African Defence Force constantly fought against overwhelming odds, yet always rising to the task, and consistently coming out as winners.
I highly recommend this book for anymore who wants really know about, and understand the conflicts the SADF fought in, with courage and tenacity....

Outstanding Account of the war along the South West / Angolan border

As the previous reviewer stated, this has got to be absolutely one of the best books written on South Africa's military involvement in South West Afrika (Namibia) and Angola. Most non-South Africans (and even many South African's these days) are unaware of just how intense and prolonged the fighting was, particularly in Angola against the Cubans (the South African's trashed them). This book tells the complete story, covering the period from 1966 to 1989. It covers the battles, the units (including special forces units like the Recces) as well as the politics.

The book is a large coffee-table format and going with the size, it includes an absolutely outstanding range of photos. I've got friends who were there, they've browsed through this book and said "ag nie manne, that was what it was like!" One of my friends was based in a military outpost photo'd in the book and he pointed out all the camp's features from the photo. It's that kind of book - if you get a chance to pick up a copy, grab it with both hands and your feet as well - it's worth it. And the author knows what he's talking about, he was there.

Remembering a forgotten war

For thiry-three years, South african forces waged a sometimes savage war in one of the most forgotten places of the world. Despite the general lack of interest from outside world,the war verged upon such "minor" subjects like the east-west conflict, the dominance over one of the richest countries in the world (a leading exporter of such trifles as gold and diamonds) and last but not least, the rightness of a country in separating its citizens by race... All this taking into account the colossal scope -geographically as well as chronologically- of this conflict.
Despite all these factors, the "south africa border war" is one of the most overlooked conflicts by the serious student of contemporary military history. Thankfully, this book comes to solve this problem. It is not the definitive book on the subject but it is a coureagous and articulated work which tries to give a general survey of the issue. In that aspect, mr. Steenkamp succeds reasonably well: the book has a reasonable structure and offers a wealth of graphic documentation, and despite the fact of the writer having fought in this war, it is a quite unprejudiced book which offers a balanced point of view about this protracted war. However more raw military data (please more TOEs and orders of battle) as well as a bibliography would have enriched the book.
At this respect, the writer (as well as those readers with an interest on the subject of the modern african wars) should have as a reference the excellent volume -regrettably written only in portuguese- about the colonial wars of this county in Africa:"Os anos da guerra colonial" by Aniceto Afonso and Carlos de Matos Gomes.

-- It does a good job of focusing on several topic areas that are important to manual therapists and other students of movement and function. The inclusion of various concepts of motion are not often found in massage therapy textbooks. Also it pairs a classical explanation of what muscles do with excellent explanations of surface anatomy, strength testing and discusses roles of the muscle beyond its action, such as its role in stabilization etc. All throughout, the text is supported by clear helpful photographs illustrated to show the movement more clearly. -- The tables are very good for detail oriented visual learners. Putting it into motion and Try This are great for the kinesthetic learner. -- The "Putting it into motion" section does a great job of addressing kinesthetic learners

helpful if you've watched some of her dharma talks

I didn't like this book at first. I still think it's hard to understand, if you haven't listened to some of her talks online. There are several at her website. Once you've seen those, the book makes more sense.

For example, I didn't understand what she meant by "groundlessness" until I watched some of the videos on her website. Her interview with Bill Moyers is particularly helpful in that regard.

I like the book better now that I've watched some of the dharma talks. By itself, it's kind of incomprehensible and even off-putting.

Born in 1975 in Nepal, the author is among the generation of Tibetan lamas trained outside of Tibet, and he's also a gifted meditator. The Mind - East meets West

We often hear and talk about the different way of thinking - Eastern or Western and left brain vs right brain. But rarely do we see a work that brings it all together in easy to understand language. The Joy of Living really does a great job of explaining how the mind works and how to make the mind work for you and what you want.

"The mind is the source of all expereince, and by changing the direction of the mind, we can change the quality of everything we experience. When you transform your mind, everything you experience is transformed."

The book is divided into three parts. Part one is "The Ground". To trully understand the benefits of meditation, you need to understand how the mind works and what we need to do to make it work for us. Here Yongey goes into great detail to explain the different parts of the brain and their function. He also enlightens the reader with the movement of scientific research concerning the mind and how the Eastern and Western thoughs are moving toward the same goal.

Part two is The Path. Here Yongey gives detailed instructions on the various methods of meditating. His explanations are very easy to understand and follow. Unlike many books I have read on meditation, he tries to make it simple and workable. He is not so much concerned with technique as he is with results.

Part three is The Fruits. This is simply a recap of the benefits to be gained from meditation.

Even if you never plan to do any formal meditation, there is a lot to be learned from this book. Basically we grow up thinking in dualistic terms - that is self vs others, mine vs theirs, having or not having. When we think this way, we are bound by limitations. This way of thinking is a habit and habits can be changed.

There are basically two concepts that cause the majority of our problems - attachment and aversion. We become attached to the way we want things to be and have an aversion to change. The lessons about reality and preception are extremely good.

Do not expect to read this book once and become enlightened. There are many concepts that will take time to sink in and become part of your way of thinking. It is a book that will need to be studied and the concepts put into practice to give you the ultimate - The Joy of Living.

I first heard of Yongey Mingyur Rinpoche when I went to a talk that he gave at Portland State University on the Science of Meditation in 2010 for extra credit in an Eastern Religions class I was taking through CCC. I was immediately impressed by his presence and humor. A while later, I came across the book at my mother-in-law's house and was like, "hey that's the guy I went to go see speak." I borrowed the book and have been permanently changed. I am part of the Portland Tergar meditation community and practice group meditation with them. I am so amazed at the reality that has unfolded before me. It is a long path but I have started walking it and am loving it every day. I love, love, love it. Read this book, it is awesome. You will not be sorry.

The teachings are very relevant to how to work with our jealousy, anger, attachment and pride as they come up in our day to day living.

Great Book! Great Timing!

Great Book. Great Timing.
I just got free from a very long, bad relationship. Packed my stuff and grabbed my dog. Rented a UHaul and headed across the country to start new again. (I am 63yrs). Bought this Audio book to listen to as I drive.
I felt all the old yuck stuff leave, and the new stuff flowing in... There is so much inspiration.
Perfect book for anyone wanting to find joy and a better look at living.

this was a beautifully written book

This book touched my heart. Her words are inspirational. Her stories are meaningful. Throughout the book, I felt she was speaking, through her words, directly to me. It was if she knew exactly what I needed to hear, as I continue my personal life journey. Thank you. Meeting Oprah Winfrey is now on my bucket list.

Profound and life altering in the best & most magnificent way!

I have followed Oprah since she began her TV show in Chicago. There is no other human being on this earth that has changed my life more, for the better, than Oprah. This book is so appreciated because it is a combination of all that she has learned and she is so giving and loving enough to share her wisdom. Oprah: I was lucky enough to be on your show, with three of my friends, one time. I have never met Oprah, but I couldn't love love her more. Thank you for the many years that you have helped us all to grow. I remember the tears that I shed when you retired from your daily talk show. I downloaded this book into my Kindle in the written and audio form, so I will be able to enjoy it for many years to come. Thank you so much for this amazing book.

A Pleasure to Read

I loved this book. I felt as if I had been invited in to sit around the Easterling family's kitchen table and partake of their everyday lives. The story flowed easily which made for an easy read and I couldn't wait to see what happened to Tom Easterling during the war. It was well written and a pleasure to read!

Real story about a real hero

The real Thomas Easterling is a member of my Sunday School class and he receives no royalties or income from this book. He is a real hero and was a POW. The story tells the glory and gore of war and his gentle presence is a witness of his faith in God. He is an inspiration.
