Marina es un ser especial, podría decir que angelical, su forma de ser, a pesar de ser tan joven tiene una personalidad interesante, es valienta, servicial, profunda, madura, tierna. Me cautivó; toda la trama de la historia está llena de muchos misterios, que sólo seguir la lectura con mucha atención, puedes ir desenrredando los misterios. Me dio mucha tristeza y nostalgia, el final de la historia. Definitivamente es un libro que recomendaría, como todos los libros de Carlos Ruiz Zafón. Están llenos de personajes misteriosos, que cautivan. La manera como describe las ciudades en donde viven, uno se traslada fácilmente a esas épocas, y se mete en sus pequeños mundos. a modest proposal

eyemagine -- i.e., imagine in your mind's keen eye -- an alternative edition presenting: (1) all of the beautiful photos; (2) a modestly expanded introduction, succinctly headlining each photo; and (3) nary a word of the as-is text (that occupies c half of the present volume). the production cost of this alternative book would be very significantly reduced, allowing for a commensurate reduction in price. aobtw, significantly fewer trees would need to be felled. ¶ in short: the text as is adds very little to this splendid collection of photos.

Astonishing+

When I bought Pakenham's precursor to this book ("Meetings With Remarkable Trees"), I was astonished then. Now I've run out of superlatives, hence the plus sign suffixing the title of my review. As enjoyable as his poetic writing style is, that's just a bonus. The highly detailed photos in this book are, well, astonishing+. He uses a heavy, large-format camera, lugging it all around the world to photograph some of the most amazing trees on the planet. And as fine as the print quality was in "Meeting With Remarkable Trees", the print quality of this book surpasses the former. I am constantly amazed at the print quality of the best books being printed today, and this is right up there at the top of the heap. You'll swear you're looking at fine, lithographic prints. I am a fanatic tree lover to begin with, and this book is just glorious, and satisfies my wildest dreams for such a book. It gives me a sense of ecstasy over being alive.

Stunning! Makes you want to daydream under a tree, and pack your bags!

It was just a couple of weeks ago that I went back to visit some of the wisest friends I know, the 4500+ year old Bristlecone Pine trees in California. I had met them a few years earlier, they had comforted me after a death in my immediate family by giving me some perspective. A short while later, I quit my job to travel the world for a couple of years. On that go round, I also visited a grove of tall trees in Redwood National Park - which had some former world record holders. I thought I had seen it all. The oldest, tallest, and in 1997, I had visited General Sherman - the largest (In volume). All of these are noted in the book with glorious photos.

Boy, was I wrong. I recently discovered another tree of distinction, also while in California. A moreton bay fig tree with a crown of 100+ feet, 75 feet tall. Magnificent. I've started to look at registers of trees, and then I found this book.

I've begun to realize there are so many more trees of distinction, and not just the ones he mentions. The author has helped open up my eyes to seeing the world in another different way. His prose, descriptions, and inclusion of historical photos makes for an enjoyable read. I like to repeat - "The true voyage of discovery, is not in going to new places, but in seeing with new eyes." - Proust. The author has succeeded in having that effect on me.

He finds glorious trees in Botswana, Madagascar, Morocco, South Africa / Japan, Sri Lanka, Turkey / France, Germany, Greece, Italy, Ireland, Portugal, Spain, Sweden / Canada, USA, Mexico / Australia, and New Zealand.

I've had the fortune of visiting 10 of these countries in my life, but other than what I noted earlier, didn't particularly make an effort to seek other trees out. I will now. My list of reasons to travel and re-visit some places is growing. Thank you Mr.Pakenham.

I'm back in the Northwest US now - home of many trees, as I drive or bicycle I pay much closer attention to the friendly giants all around. I'm sure I'll lie down under one of them soon and have that daydream.

Why this book?

When Russia almost beat Canada in the famous Summit series of the early 2970s, North American coaches and players began to realize that a year-round conditioning program, similar to that used by the Russians, was essential to the development of hockey players. Although the Russians were highly skilled, they dominated many of the early games of the eight-game series, especially in the later stages, primarily because of their superb conditioning. After this series, year-round conditioning programs were developed and produced for North Americans, although many were not well thought out and not sport specific. Today our knowledge of training programs is scientifically-based, and it is very rare that an older, elite hockey player is not participating in a year-round conditioning program of some type.

About the Author
TUDOR O. BOMPA, Ph.D., revolutionized Western training methods when he introduced his groundbreaking theory of periodization in Romania in 1963. After adopting his training system, the Eastern Bloc countries dominated international sports through the 1970s and 1980s. Dr. Bompa has personally trained 11 Olympic Games medallists (including four gold medallists), and has served as a consultant to coaches and athletes worldwide. A professor at York University, Toronto, Canada, Tudor Bompa has authored several important books on the theory and methodology of training that are used worldwide. Dr. Bompa's work has been translated into nine languages, and he has made presentations on training theories in more than 30 countries.

DAVE CHAMBERS, Ph.D., is currently a professor in the coaching program in the department of Kinesiology and Health Science at York University in Toronto. Dave has coached for 30 years at the amateur, high school, junior A, university: PRofessional, and international levels, and is recognized as a "Master Coach" by the Canadian Hockey Association. He coached in the National Hockey League for three years, has coached two national teams to gold medals in World Championships, university teams to a number of league championships and one national title, and has won five "Coach of the Year" awards. Dave has written a number of books on coaching ice hockey and has made numerous presentations worldwide.

A Reality Check on Sisterhood

Do you think your family is the only dysfunctional one? Think again! Meet Paula, Alise, Callie, and Marlisa, the four sisters in Nina Guilbeau's novel, Too Many Sisters. One sister is devious and a scam artist. One is very smart. One is heartbroken. And, the fourth is a home wrecker.

The story mainly focuses on Callie as she is the heartbroken one and everything seems to be spiraling out of control. Each sister wants something from her - her trust even though they are not completely honest, her business and her husband. As the story develops, secrets and lies continue to fall out of this family's closet.

The author used such vivid language that I laughed out loud during various scenes and I could envision them as well. Too Many Sisters gave a dose of reality that not all families are perfect and we must choose wisely who we will trust. Just like reality this book was not predictable and we could experience the characters ups and downs as they dealt with various life situations.

I definitely recommend this book to anyone looking for a quick, comical read.

"Too many sisters" was a great, quick read! Its main character Callie was relatable and I actually found myself trying to place her sisters to members of my own family. I'd recommend this book to anyone looking for an entertaining book about family, friends, and life. Can't wait for the sequel!
