Great Reference!!!

While studying for the PMP exam and as a practitioner, I found this tool to be straight-forward and useful for running projects. I would totally recommend it for exam prep and daily reference. I did however notice that one diagram was misaligned on page 222 and it covered part of the subsequent definition making it difficult to read. This slightly impacted my perceived quality of the product. All in all, it's worth the buy.

Indispensable for the Amateur Roaster -- And No Longer Dated

In June, 2001, I wrote about "Home Coffee Roasting":

"This book is worth several times its purchase price for the two-page roasting chart alone. As a technically-oriented (read: geek) amateur roaster with three (3) roasters (a Hearthware Precision, an Alpenrost, and the fabulous Sonofresco fluid bed) I am constantly referring to this book to improve my art and understanding.

But, amazingly, the book -- only a few years in print -- is now dated, because the equipment options for the home coffee roaster have increased so much. My three roasters (or the types they represent) are not covered. That's the only reason that I gave this 4 stars instead of 5. But if you roast coffee at home -- regardless of your equipment -- you need this book.

What else is missing? I'd love to see a table in the appendix covering the top 50 (or so) growing regions and rating the AVERAGE bean on acidity, sweetness, body, finish, etc, so that one has a clue where to begin when making a blend. The professional coffee roaster is cupping samples all day long, and quickly learns the characteristics of the world's coffees. But we amateurs, buying 1, 2, or 5 lbs at a time could use a secret decoder ring that would tell us in advance what variety we should order that has a good chance of rounding out that blend that is "not quite there yet." Short of that, David's excellent narrative coverage in the book of different coffee characteristics will have to do."

With the release of the "Revised, Updated Edition", the book no longer merits the caveats I described. In particular, Davids has meticulously covered the wide range of available home -- as well as cafe or semi-professional -- roasting equipment, and has excellent coverage of the growing availability of equipment and green coffee sources via the Internet. After 5 years of blending and roasting many pounds per week, and as a writer, I probably could by now have almost written this, and yet I found it endlessly entertaining and informative. Someone new to the hobby will, as I said in 2001, find it indispensable.

Fun, informative and enlightening!

Let me start off by saying that I do not like to read at all. I rarely start books and even more rarely finish them. With this book however I read it from cover to cover in three days! A very fun book for the coffee hobbyist or anyone who would like to learn more about coffee and home coffee roasting. Not only is this book packed with history (in a fun way) it is also a wealth of reference information regarding home roasting and the overall coffee process, from plant to cup!

This book is laid out in a very easy to read format. The chapters can be long but everything is broken down into small 1-4 page sections. Kenneth Davids has a real grasp on the fundamentals of coffee production and lays out a lot of information in an easy to follow entertaining way. The book reads very well from cover to cover.

The content is not too scientific and also not too general. Whether you have no idea about anything coffee or you are a coffee hobbyist (like me) you will learn a lot and come to appreciate all that goes into a truly good cup of coffee. Davids also includes a lot of reference information laid out in a fashion that is easy to search and locate specific information such as coffee origin notes, roasting and flavor terms, roasting equipment and methods to name a few. Davids does review and discuss many of todays home roasting equipment quite well however this information is already dated. Not to worry though the total of this information represents a small portion of the total book.

Included are also a lot of drawings and diagrams. This book really captures the romance of coffee and coffee roasting and delivers it in a wonderful easy to read and use fashion. I cannot put this book down and have read and reread many parts of it. I refer to the roasting notes and procedures to assist in my home roasting. This book is as much an indispensable tool as it is an entertaining easy chair read. If you even have a slight interest in coffee then this book has a lot to offer!

A fine work badly in need of an update

I found this book to be very informative and useful for a novice about to start home roasting his own coffee. However, the equipment and resource sections are woefully out of date. This book was published back in 1996 and it shows; there have been many products and resources for the home roaster released into the market since then.
If you are interested in roasting your own coffee, read this book. Even though it is slightly out of date, it is full of useful information, well-written and well-presented.

Delightful! This book is delightful! You will walk side by side with Beatrix as she eats her rice pudding every day. Walk with her in Scotland as she learns all about mushrooms. You will weap with her. You will also rejoice with her. You will long to see the world in a different way. Experience what it is like to want to know MORE. I truly believe with all my heart that this book is a living book. It will stay with you all of your days. Read this book to your children. It will be a sringboard for them to new and exciting ways of learning.

Our Mother-Daughter bookgroup read this book and everyone fell in love with Beatrix Potter all over again. Our girls are 9 & 10 year olds and it prompted them to pull out their favorite old Potter books and share them with the rest of the group. But I think Moms appreciated the book more. We made the meal Beatrix ate every day as a child and shared it to bring the story a little closer to us.

Dr. John DeFrain is a Professor Emeritus of Family Studies at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. His work focuses on the development of strong couples and families nationally and internationally. Among his most recent books are Marriages and Families: Intimacy, Diversity, and Strengths (8th Edition), and Strong Families Around the World: Strengths-Based Research and Perspectives. The University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension Family Action Research and Writing Team has been working together the past decade on written materials to help strengthen couple and family relationships. The team's first book, Family Treasures: Creating Strong Families, presented more than 60 activities to help develop the six key couple and family strengths. David Icke is a truly prolific author, lecturer, and researcher, covering some of the most advanced knowledge and information on the planet. His books tend to recap his prior works and then add on some new material and some more expanded ideas about how to integrate and comprehend what he has uncovered. He covers a vast amount of material (this new book is over 900 pages in length) and connects together a number of topics and areas of research. Many of the topics relate to conspiratorial forces at work in human society as well as metaphysics and occult science, showing how limited our perception of reality truly is. Icke has a good grasp of the concepts in physics and metaphysics which demonstrate how illusory and narrow our perception of reality is, and how consciousness/awareness is what underlies everything.

Icke goes through a lot of details about extraterrestrial influences on human civilization and how much of this relates to what he now refers to as the "archons" and their agenda. Archons is a term from ancient Gnostic writings, which refers to the dark/evil forces that hijack Creation for their own manipulative pursuits. Icke considers the "reptilians" he has long spoken about to be one major expression of the Archon consciousness, but not the only one. He describes how satanism and pedophilia are deeply connected to those dark power structures, and goes over how human beliefs systems are pretty much all "bollocks," i.e. full of B.S. that separates us from our true spiritual power and freedom.

Icke repeats his mantra that infinite love and infinite possibility are the only truth, with all else being illusion. He, of course, spends a lot of time examining the multiple levels of the illusion and how they function. In my view a majority of what he is saying is accurate, though some of his conclusions about how perceived reality is hacked and manipulated with a synthetic "matrix" version, is sketchy and uncertain, even though he does present intriguing evidence of how the frequencies and waveforms in our solar system may be tampered with by beings possessing advanced technologies. I also believe he fails to make a key point that as spiritual beings our own higher consciousness (soul, higher self, whatever one may choose to name it) has chosen to place it's energy and awareness into this reality game to learn from the experience - thus everything fits into a higher purpose and there's nothing to be feared. We can each proceed on our own journey of spiritual evolution, examining ALL of the belief systems that surround us and which may have influenced ourselves. Icke does a great job being irreverent and encouraging us to question all the trappings and institutions of our society. The hypocrisy and deception found in religions and "New Age" beliefs are exposed, as we're reminded to be discerning and take in the truth while tossing aside the manipulations.

Those who are patient and intelligent enough to read David Icke's books in their entirety will find lots of informational gems. Icke is not afraid to confront challenging topics and disturbing facts. It is helpful to not be too attached to any pre-existing beliefs or allegiances as you read his book. Also, be able to examine what he shares from a place of balance and neutrality - if Creation can contain all potentialities then why wouldn't it include some of the pathological things he talks about? Those things are just a small slice of the totality of Creation, though since they are part of the physical state vibrational world we are immersed in there are things for us to learn from them. When we fail to confront that shadow material we actually help empower it to control us from beyond our conscious awareness. Icke is bringing more and more people into awareness of many things that have been hidden. The current era that we live in is one of major revelations that will shake the foundations of human society. Icke is one of the more advanced spirits playing an important role in this process. He has his own weaknesses and misjudgments, yet he is definitely someone worth paying attention to for those who desire to expand their awareness. I would highly recommend this book for anyone seeking to understand the world we live in and to explore the deeper nature of existence.

Don't be an ostrich - read this book!

How does David Icke keep writing these books and expanding on all these details? Does this man ever sleep? This is his longest book yet, and I can't seem to stop reading them because he makes me laugh and laugh at times, and then keep me spiritually awake, inspired, and looking at the world with greater insight and understanding of how easy it is for all of us to fall back to sleep.

Don't miss this latest book about how we're all trapped in the matrix. It's time to wake up and this will help you not only awaken, but stay awake. Yes, it's a bit scarey to read some of this information, but think about it this way: if you're an ostrich with your head in the ground so you can't see danger and are about to be attacked, are you really doing yourself a favor to pretend that you're safe because you can't see the danger?

Bought this to help me prepare for the Fundamentals of Surveying Exam and while the list of topics on the test is expansive, this books really only hits the high points at best. If anything, it will illustrate a few of your weak points and you can search for books that concentrate on specific topics.

Land Survey Review Manual

I purchased this book in 2004 in preparation for the National PLS Exam after failing the exam by 3 points on the first attempt. In my opinion, the most useful parts of this manual are the sample questions and answers along with Appendix B "Preparing for and Taking Examinations" where the author breaks down the multiple choice format. I would highly recommend this review manual for anyone preparing for the National PLS exam or even the new test format that will be given on the 2012 CA State Specific exam. Even though we have no idea what the test format will be for the 2012 State Specific Exam, this book will prove to be a valuable resource particularly for the multiple choice questions. I would also recommend this manual for Civil Engineers taking the survey portion of their exam.

This book provides an excellent review of surveying for anyone taking the Professional Land Surveyor Exam or California Special Civil Exam for surveying. The writing style is friendly and easy. All aspects of Surveying covered including law, measurement and calculations. Many practice questions with answers. An unusual feature is that the practice question are learning tools, new ideas are introduced throught the questions, forcing you to think in order to understand. Detailed index, bibliography for further study and a description of the NCEES exam format.

When you think of paella you bring to mind the traditional dish with chicken and seafood. This book contains other ingredient recipes. If you eat a lot of rice you might be interested in this book. You will not get tired of these dishes.

Highly opinionated and superficial

Blah. Joyner uses the preface to justify the book's obvious shortcomings: "It is comparatively economical in price and size. That's the reason for it's length, the lack of companion CDs, lyrics, and color photographs. Paper, copyright permissions, and color printing cost a lot of money." So be aware, this is a low-budget item in various respects. It's just barely substantial enough for a school to get away with telling parents and the district BoE that the subject was taught. If you want something that does more than scratch the surface, or provides more than the absolute minimum of textbook production value, look elsewhere. The British Invasion deserves more than 9 pages plus a couple of song analyses.

One might think that, given the apparent importance of brevity, Mr. Joyner would skew the ratio of fact and opinion more in the direction of fact, particularly when some of the opinions he expresses are utterly misguided. To wit: "Stadium rock continued through the 1980s with bands such as Styx, Rush, Boston, Kansas, and Heart. The music of these bands was inherently formulaic and corporate and would lead to major underground rebellions along the way with musical styles such as disco, punk, and grunge."

Rush's music is formulaic and corporate? Disco was a rebellion against bands like Styx or Kansas? Such assertions throw every other opinion in the text into doubt. Also, the famous 3-song Yes album is titled "Close To The Edge", not "Closer To The Edge". Let's call that one a typo, but speaking of that band, it's a strange editorial decision to make the heading of the section about them "Rick Wakeman and Yes". Why put it that way? Rick's a legend, but to suggest that he was the primary source of Yes's prog sound is a real stretch. "Roundabout", which is arguably the band's most popular classic progressive rock song, features some great playing by Wakeman, but it was composed by Jon Anderson and Steve Howe. Many of Yes's records don't even feature Wakeman as a band member, and his solo efforts made far less of a contribution to the progressive rock genre than the band that made him famous, let alone King Crimson, Pink Floyd, Genesis, etc.

The edition I have is called the "Jersey City Edition" but in the section about jazz-rock fusion there is no mention of one of the absolute founding fathers of the genre, guitarist Al DiMeola, who is from Jersey City. Also unseen in the text is PM Dawn, a couple of Jersey City boys whose contribution to hip-hop is worth at least a sentence or two.

The writing is decent. The artists and styles that are mentioned are certainly essential. But I have reservations about recommending this book for classroom use, and certainly not for personal education.

This book does not look bad at all. It seems to provide a more or less thorough history of american popular music. It is organized and would be a good study guide. The first edition came out in 1993, so all or most of the information in this volume cannot have just been ripped off the web.

American Popular Music

The Joyner book an excellent survey of popular music. I chose it for a college general survey course on popular music I taught in Sping 10--it was a great class and the students reacted well to the book. Joyner treats each genre of popular music in a chronological manner, showing their development and influence on each another. The section on courtry music is especially interesting. ITunes links are provided to songs covered in the text. A number of the ITunes links are not the same arrangements discussed in the text, but they are easy enough to track down. I give this book a high recommendation, especially to anyone looking for a general overview of American popular music.
