In arguing for this point, Hegel shows that the kind of self-division which is characteristic of human agency also provides human agents with an updated version of an Aristotelian final end of life.
Pinkard treats this conception of the final end of "being at one with oneself" in two parts. The first part focuses on Hegel's account of agency in naturalist terms and how it is that agency requires such a self-division, while the second part explores how Hegel thinks a historical narration is essential for understanding what this kind of self-division has come to require of itself. In making his case, Hegel argues that both the antinomies of philosophical thought and the essential fragmentation of modern life are all not to be understood as overcome in a higher order unity in the "State." On the contrary, Hegel demonstrates that modern institutions do not resolve such tensions any more than a comprehensive philosophical account can resolve them theoretically. The job of modern practices and institutions (and at a reflective level the task of modern philosophy) is to help us understand and live with precisely the unresolvability of these oppositions. Therefore, Pinkard explains, Hegel is not the totality theorist he has been taken to be, nor is he an "identity thinker," à la Adorno. He is an anti-totality thinker.

Unfortunately, there were no reviews available when I bought my copy. This is strictly undergrad material; nothing deeper. So beware. If you are familiar with Hegel stay clear of this book. It has a 2012 publication date but has no contemporary trends addressed. A good book for a junior in college. There could have been other avenues of addressing the topics; but the target audience might have been undergrads. They need books too. Not recommended to those who know Hegel's work

Great for understanding the big picture

As an independent consultant working exclusively from home, all of my teams are virtual, even if they are located a few miles away. I bought this book not to enhance my relationships with those team members but rather to help me develop two training classes on this book's subtitle: "wikis, blogs, and other collaborative tools." While I pored over chapters 12-18 attempting to organize my own thoughts, I enjoyed the authors' writing style and found the depth appropriate for a high-level understanding of each topic. I am now reading the remaining chapters, sure that I will uncover a nugget or two that will help me in my daily work life.

Useful... with a grain of salt.

This book has a lot of suggestions for effective team management over distances. The book itself was written as a distance collaboration using many of the same techniques and technologies written about. However, the book doesn't always give clear definitions. Some of the definitions are overly simplistic or of dubious origin. In my reading (this was a textbook for a class of mine) I found at least two uses of Wikipedia as a source for definitions. I find this not only sloppy, but lazy, and my biggest issue with the book. As a college student who is forbidden, by professors and by better judgment, to use Wikipedia as a source, the concept of learning things directly from Wikipedia makes me uneasy. Wikipedia has its uses (it is effectively used once to show where an updated listing of web-lingo can be found online), but not as a source.

If you are unfamiliar with different collaborative technologies (VoIP, VPN's, Version Control Systems, etc.) this is not the place to find specific information about them. The definitions are too vague. This book will give you examples of their usage in corporate circumstances. It will also give you suggestions for managing conflict over distances and avoiding issues when project members rarely meet face to face.

I did not find this book useful. It seems to be geared for pointy haired manager types who have never heard of the Internet. There was very little information that was not either obvious, outdated or both.

Too much blab and padding

While Karr can turn excellent phrases, she seems here to have seen the need to stretch out the incidents of her childhood unnecessarily, and choke them up with too many words (when simplicity would have had far greater impact). Karr comes across as the type of writer who refused to let her writing be edited; this book could have been a great achievement if a good editor had gone through it and weeded out the fluff. As it is the narrative is frequently like struggling to mow a lawn that hasn't been tended to in years--very tough going.

An Interesting Memoir With Some Issues

I generally liked this memoir. The people who gave it one star seem to have problems. There a few issues that I have with the book. First, as at least one other reviewer stated, it needed a better editor who would separate the wheat from the chaff. Some of the pointless detail had me pulling my hair out, and I don't have that much left to pull out. I found myself pushing hard to get through certain sections of the book.

Then there's the issue of jumping around in time. [Spoiler Alert] If that wasn't maddening enough, one section ends with her mother in a mental institution and the next opens with the kids and the mother traveling to Seattle WITHOUT ONE SINGLE WORD ABOUT HOW THE MOTHER GOT OUT OF THE MENTAL INSTITUTION. It's not referred to at all.

Finally this: I'm four years younger than the author. I can't fathom how she could possibly remember so many details from when she was a little kid, so many years ago. As a beginning memoir writer myself, I'm having trouble pulling out details from my teen years. One wonders if Mary simply invented details after-the-fact.

I'd actually give this 3.5 stars but the problems with the narrative preclude that. However,having said that, I'm not sorry I read this book. It was still worth reading.

Glass Castle, this is not. The introduction by the author made me think that I was about to be blown away and unable to put it down..She really doesn't have an inferiority complex...and the reviews were all glowing, so after that I have to say that I was disappointed. I could put it down; I wasn't blown away; it didn't change my life. I compared it to "The Glass Castle" since going into it it sounded like the authors had similar backgrounds, so comparing it side by side it doesn't, to me, hold up. I think that if I hadn't read the introduction and all of the reviews I would have liked it more-It just left a bad taste that she went on and on about how many people approach her and tell her how she changed their lives with her book. I went into this expecting to LOVE it based on that and then go on to read her other books, however now I'm not so sure I will.

A Tour De Force Ending Of Cheetham's Trilogy

Have eagerly awaited this work. A brilliant exposition of the relevance of Henri Corbin's worldview for our dying culture. The world is in the soul, not the soul in the world. The complete trilogy is a survey of how we have come to this impasse, and offers the beginning of a means of an escape. The texts of the three Abramanic faiths as a theophany not a prison. To quote the young boy to St. Augustine, "Take and Read..." The World Turned Inside Out; Green Man Earth, Earth Angel; After Prophecy by Thomas Cheetham.

College-bound...the smart way

This book offers highly valuable advice for parents and students who want to remain debt-free, or extremely close to it. We are on the Dave Ramsey route of being debt free. Yet higher education is a must for our kids, but so expensive. Its important for parents to know that you can send your kids to school without being swallowed whole by debt. This guide lays out some really solid options to consider. It's clear the author has done extensive research into this subject, and for the price, its a great value on your road to a debt free college degree.

Wow! Who knew?

This book is a treasure trove of information! You won't find this from any counselor at any institute. Imagine getting your college education for little or no money. This is a must have book for anyone getting ready to enroll in higher education. Don't be like the masses and blindly amass $50,000 + in student loans.

If you apply the information in this book you can earn your degree before your friends and then not spend the next 10 years working to pay back your debts. I would give anything if someone would have given me this book right out of high school.

This book will save you tons of time, if you are pondering what are the best options in terms of pursuing a college degree. Cyrus guides you through the details of accreditation and shares tons of practical and useful tips. This book is a MUST read about Healthcare

This book is as true as it gets.It is not for the nurses, they live it. It is for the Leaders and Managers that create those internal processes that the nurses work in. This is about Hospital process failures and how the nurse staff runs faster to try to take care of Patients while trying to trick the systems into working. Broken systems, that even if they partially work, are out of sync and are user unfriendly to say the least. There is no coordinated effort to fix them. It is just, keep fighting the fires day in and day out. Both Nurse and Physicians are frustrated and probably so is the hospital management staff. Management staff don't know how to fix this and stay within budget. But the worse part, this has been common knowledge since 1999 when the paper " To Err is Human" came out. Now there are more hospitals are being built and more people that die daily. 1000+ people a day die in hospitals from avoidable causes. It is now the leading cause of death in the U.S. -Yes - going into the hospital! That's about 400,000 people a Year in 2013! How come we don't see that in the news every night? Must read!

I met the author through networking and found his book. I think it is an accurate depiction of what our healthcare has become. As a matter of fact, it elicited an emotional response - which shows it is well written. The author takes you on the floor, on the front line - and accurately shows what is going on. Our country is lagging behind in healthcare. We keep using band aids when we need to prevent the injuries/ illnesses. Invest to save. I enjoyed this book for a couple reasons, it showed me why I left bedside nursing - and it is a great step to assist healthcare decision makers understand, or get a glimpse of what is going on - and why their decisions are so important. Ask front line staff - value their opinions. We, as healthcare clinicians routinely fix and solve problems creatively - but we are getting very tired. Time to turn it around. Inevitably we, or our loved ones, will be present in that hospital bed someday - who do you want taking care of you? Thank you Colin for sharing.

A fresh approach to reducing costs and waste in the US healthcare system

Baird and Sundahl aptly portray a refreshing look at our healthcare system at the day-to-day operations level. However, most importantly they present the reader with a roadmap of how to fix the problems plaguing the system: practice one of Covey's 7 habits of highly effective people: seek first to understand, then to be understood. Instead of trying to continually putting out fires try to understand the customers' and their caregivers' needs. A must and easy read for healthcare professionals who are serious about reducing the cost and waste in the delivery of healthcare in the US.
