Wonderful focus on listening!

Many students have trouble with the learning part of the TOEFL because it requires them to hear, understand, process, and then apply the foreign language. This book is so wonderful because it gives students extra practice in one of the more difficult areas of the TOEFL test, the listening section. Students can use the written tests as practice, but they can also use a CD-ROM and cassette tapes to really hone their listening skills. The practice exercises and tests in the book are just like those that students will really take, so the practice is not only in listening skills, but also in test-taking skills.
This book is a wonderful took for students looking for general TOEFL format practice, and especially those looking for practice int he listening area of the TOEFL. The writers have really focused on understanding the problems their readers may have encountered, and on solving those problems with practical, applicable tips and hints.

We use this book in our TOEFL study group(3 of my friends get together everyday and study for the test) and I think it is especially helpful for foreign students who are weak on the Listening section of the TOEFL. This book is concentrated on the listening section so it has more listening practice questions than other general books. And the book has both the CD-rom and cassette tapes so you can make use of them at home. The book gives you practices on all kinds of new question types on the TOEFL including matching and ordering and clicking, etc., so it was fun to study with this book.

We use this book in our ESL TOEFL class and I think it is a lot of help for foreign students who are weak on the Listening Section of the TOEFL. This book really has so much practice questions and I really liked that. Also, the new question types such as ordering, matching... were included so you can prepare for the new CBT toefl well. If you are a student worried about the listening section of the TOEFL, then, stop worrying and just get this book and study!

Scriptural Stewardship

This is a NIV Study Bible, with a 70-page concordance, maps, 30-day and one-year reading schedules, etc., as your might expect in a study Bible. However, what sets this Bible apart from others is its focus on seven key purposes of Scriptural stewardship, which are addressed with stewardship-specific introductions to each book of the Bible, frequent "Exploring Stewardship" discussions, interesting profiles, and numerous "Stewardship Challenges."

The seven purposes of stewardship that are addressed include: (1) Unique Calling--a prompting toward fulfilling our unique role in the Body of Christ; (2) Unquestionable Character--a prompting toward who we are called to be as individuals; (3) Unquenchable Compassion--a prompting toward placing others' needs before our own; (4) Undying Commitment--a prompting toward obedience to God regardless of the cost; (5) Unending Celebration--a constant expression of worship as God's stewards fulfill their calling; (6) Unparalleled Commission--a recognition of the privilege to share in the fulfillment of God's mission; and (7) Unwavering Conformity--a prompting toward conforming to God's will and desires.

As you can see, the emphasis on stewardship goes beyond church giving, money management, social and philanthropic responsibilities, and even our responsibilities to the poor and neglected. What I love so much about the Stewardship Study Bible is that it clearly uncovers what God's word has to say about being wise stewards of EVERY aspect of life. Typically, when the word "stewardship" is mentioned, the first thing that comes to mind for most people is the financial aspect of stewardship, including giving and tithing. This Bible clearly unpacks every aspect of Stewardship, including our time, talents, relationships and the environment in a deep and meaningful way, well beyond the dollars and cents. I highly recommend it to anyone, great job!

Two quality books that dissect Biology very well into two important aspects--physiology and molecular/cell bio. Some may call this book long-winded, but the questions and passages seem above AAMC quality, meaning that they're very tough and conceptual. But the end-result of doing well on the MCAT is definitely within reach, as per The Berkeley Review's goal. I've seen amazing results so far in interpreting the material from the texts!

Really wordy but helpful

The Bio BR books are kind of difficult to get through. The books are huge, and the passages are really difficult. But I hear that the difficulty of these problems helps with the relatively easier questions on the MCAT. I would say you should supplement this book with something else that gives you the more basic, straightforward facts. The main ideas can get lost in the ton of details that this book has.

Another volume in the stellar series by the Crossroad Press, like the other volumes in this series, 'How to Read the New Testament' by Etienne Charpentier comes from the French series by Les Editions du Cerf. It can be read as volume two, following Charpentier's book 'How to Read the Old Testament', or as a volume by itself.
This is in some ways a guide for those who don't know how to read the Bible. It is in some ways done as a travel guide - the Bible is the destination, but like most geographic places, there are actually a variety of landmarks and stops to make in any location, and these will all vary.
This book is richly illustrated with maps, line-art drawings, side-bar boxes and pull-boxes, and other graphic-design features that make reading an adventure. One can read through each chapter as a narrative, and then return to fill in the blanks with the sidelined information.
The first twenty pages are a sort of preparation for the journey. It looks at the basic structure of the New Testament. It looks at three stages of development in the formation of the New Testament: the life and teaching of Jesus, the original communities and their shared stories, then the final redaction and writing of the texts. Then, Charpentier looks both at the literary genre of the Gospels, and the literary genres found in the Gospels. One of Charpentier's very interesting observations is that it is fortunate for us that we do not have a photograph of Jesus - we might even feel, by extension, that we are fortunate to have the ambiguous textual story of him that we do.
The chapters that follow roughly the historical order of the three stages of development: the world of the first Christians, the Easter event celebrated, the person and work of Paul, a look at each of the Gospels and other writings (Mark, Matthew, Luke/Acts, the Gospel and Letters of John, the Apocalypse), and ends with the enigmatic yet meaningful discussion of the beginnings of the Gospels - the Gospels are never ending, in a very real sense. Each chapter has a narrative section of history, with a second section looking at a key idea or piece of importance for later Christian development and practice.
This guide can be used individually or as part of groups in church or school settings. It's outline would make for a good one-semester course on the New Testament at the undergraduate or even advanced high school level, a Sunday school or Bible school series, or for an individual to use as 'traveller's friend' while going it alone.
This book assumes the reader will have a copy of the Bible to use side by side with the text - it does not replace the Bible or the necessity of reading the actual texts in the New Testament. The author recommends the Revised Standard Version or the Jerusalem Bible; both of which have also been updated since the original writing of this volume.
Charpentier gives a good but somewhat dated list for further reading in New Testament and Gospel studies. He also gives a list of the writings of the Early Church Fathers for a look at the further development of Christian writing prior to the closure and formation of the canon of the New Testament.
A great study aid, interesting and useful. Fr. Etienne Charpentier dedicated much of his effort to encouraging Bible study, particularly among his fellow Catholics. He gives tribute to those who worked with him in Chartres and across France as co-workers in the production of this volume.

Great (Fairly) Unbiased Overview of Korean History

Wonderful Resource on Korean History

I had been looking for a good history book on Korea that could give an overview of Korea's history and culture without being overly dry and especially without being overly nationalistic. This is the book that I had been looking for and that I wish I could have read before going to live in Korea for a few years.

The book is very well organized and each chapter gives a small paragraph "abstract" on the forthcoming chapter. Interspersed within the text are various "pictorial essays" which at first I feared would be irrelevant and distracting. Instead they are absolutely fascinating and really complement the text. The author uses them, as well as many other references to present Korea not just from a historical list of happenenings but also from the impact of music, cultual diffucion, and other issues that impacted the people, and therefore the history. This is in addition to his easy-to-read style of writing that doesn't bog down with pseudo-intellectualism... it reads quick and clean and is very interesting without being dry.

Being a fairly small overview, he does cover some material, especially modern topics, in a good general way without a lot of depth or time. A glance though the rear of the book gives up his sources and a way to get further depth though.

Being a very handy size, this book can be tucked away for travel quite easily for anyone going to Korea for fun, work or martial arts. I'd highly recommend this book for Global Studies/World History teachers, Korean style martial arts enthusiasts, travellers to East Asia and anyone interested in Korea. Excellent reference book!

Bad For Beginners

This book is very well written but it is a bad place for beginners to start. The author clearly expects the reader to have a working knowledge of East Asian history and culture. This was my first book on East Asian history and I was frequently confused by the many vague references to Chinese and Japanese history. I had to get online and look up about 20 different people or events in Japan or China that were used by the author, but were not explained at all. Every facet of Korea is 'similar to' something from China or Japan that I've never heard of. Korean art, for example, is described by saying 'Like Chinese art, except for these three little differing details.' For someone who hasn't studied Chinese art, this is not very illuminating. Now the ONLY thing I know about Korean art is those three little details. It would have been great if I had studied Japan and China and just wanted to know how Korea fit in with the rest of Eastern Asia, but this book is not for East Asian beginners.

interesting introduction but has some flaws

I'd bought this book just before a trip to Korea this autumn.

The good piont is that it gives you a good idea of Korea's fascinating history from ancient times to presentday and if you're travelling to the country you will feel like you have a lot more context (if you visit any tourist sites, you'll notice that a lot of the explanations assume you already have this background)

The bad points are two: one is that the author seems rather defensive about the nastier bits of Korean history which I think is a bit patronizing at best and also takes away from the credibility. The other is that because it's trying to cover so much ground at times it feels like a big list rather than a coherent narrative, but that I guess is normal given the breadth to cover in just a couple hundred pages.

A Survival Horror Video Game Makes for a Great Play

As someone who loves both theatre and video games, I thought this was an excellent play. The style of the script is different, but a nice change from the usual dramatic fare. Someone who is not familiar with video games (especially MMORPGs) may have some questions while reading this, but that shouldn't detract from the story and drama. The themes of the dangerous power of fear and the strained relationships between parents and teenagers are strong enough to give emotional depth to the plot, which makes the seemingly harmless virtual world of gaming blend into the real one.

This play does have a fair amount of bad language (and violence), but not much more than other contemporary dramatic works. Also, since Neighborhood 3 is a play that revolves around a survival horror game, it stands to reason that a few parts of this play can be a tad bit frightening and disturbing, depending on your level of tolerance (mine is not very high, so if you're like me, you'll be fine). On another note, while this script is not perfect, and does not win any awards for amazing plot twists, the story of the residents of this neighborhood is intriguing enough to keep you engaged to the end. I've never read a play like this, and never one that resonates with me as much as this one does.

A useful read in some parts but impenetrably dense in others

Paul Binski's Medieval Death: Ritual and Representation is something of a mixed bag. What the reader will get out of it largely depends on what the reader is looking for and what the reader's particular background is. It is helpful to think of the book being presented as described in the subtitle, i.e. medieval death in terms of its ritual in actual life and in terms of its representation in art, literature and religious philosophy and thought.

For myself, I felt Binski's presentation was distinctly more accessible in the first half of the book where he deals with how Christianity of the early medieval period affected how death was viewed and dealt with in Europe, particularly with regard to the rituals of burial, the increasing importance and evolving roles of tombs and of the relics of saints. I learned quite a bit that I was not previously aware of.

For example, the problem that developed regarding tombs in cathedrals and other religious institutions. Initially burials within churches were strictly prohibited, which was a problem in that everyone wanted to be buried within the church as that was considered the most sacred ground. And things being what they were, it was difficult for even the church to say no to kings, so initially exceptions were made for monarchs. Which in turn led to exceptions being made for well-regarded bishops and abbots, which led to exceptions being made for the higher nobility, and eventually to rich merchants. All of which led to the problem of increasing numbers of medieval churches, cathedrals, abbies and such becoming so cluttered with tombs that it became difficult for them to fulfill their original function of conducting religious services. The book is well-illustrated and includes photographs that illustrate the increasingly elaborate tomb designs that, however impressive, only served to add to the clutter.

Another particularly interesting section dealt with the role of effigies in dealing with the death of kings:

"The death of a monarch was a means of disclosing and enforcing forms of power.... When... a king died, an elaborate series of rituals was developed to guarantee the transference of power, and to cancel the inevitable anxieties which arose at such points of passage. In the case of royal burial... the principal strategic problem was where power was located in the period between the death of one monarch and the inauguration of the next. ... In the interim phase after the death of a monarch, the body politic could be incorporated not in a person at all but in an image: a funeral effigy, which could be ritually respected as if it were the king itself.... The power of such images is demonastrated in France by the fact that the Dauphin, the heir to the throne whose reign had notionally begun at his father's death, could not be seen with the image of his father lest two kings should be seen to rule in this state of political liminality."

The section dealing with what evolved as a cult of the relics of saints clarified for me why they were so prized. In medieval belief, formed as it was by the Christian belief in the ultimate literal resurrection of the body, the souls of saints were still connected to the remains of their earthly bodies. And so prayers given in the vicinity of those remains were more likely to be heard by the saints and then passed on to God. In the simplest terms, the relics of saints were regarded as something on the order of a direct hot-line to God, which is why they were so highly prized to the point that one sometimes had the rather unseemly spectacle of clergy and monks of rival institutions sometimes brawling in the streets over who should get the remains of recently deceased religious figures thought to be likely candidates for sainthood.

When the book's focus shifts to the matter of representation, however, the prose becomes increasingly dense and unless the reader has a fairly substantial interest, and background, in matters of medieval art, literature and religious philosophy, particularly with regards to the issue of purgatory in those areas to which Binski devotes a great deal of attention, the lay reader is apt to to become somewhat numbed by the inaccessibility and unlikely to gain much from it. An example of the style in this section would be this:

"Nevertheless, it's fairly clear that to understand the why and when of the transi tomb, we have to sidestop this literary component, tempting as it may be to see the textual elements of such tombs as offering a simple key to their iconogrophy and signification. Transi tombs are regarded too often as a transparent form of text - as the visual equivalent to a literary culture of guilt and penance, as sermons in stone -- with multiple points of reference to a substantial body of thought, to which they are related as second-order epiphenomena. Owst long ago noted that the character of admonitions of the 'such shalt thou be' type were common in Mendicant-inspired sermonizing on death in the tradition going back at least to St. Bernard. But there is no reason to assume from this that tombs of this type were essentially like sermons: their didacticism was much more class-specific."

Overall, I would recommend this book as at least partly worth reading for anyone interested in medieval burial and tombs, in how Christianity affected how people thought of death in relation to the soul and the body, and in particular how cults arose around the relics of saints and how tombs inside cathedrals and monasteries became a serious space problem over the centuries. Beyond that however, I would only recommend it for readers with an interest and background in medieval art and religious thought and in how death was viewed in those veins.
