A Redundant Collection

This is a completely dispensable work. It is "Christian Reflections", with "On Church Music" left out. To be sure, "On Church Music" isn't much of a work, but it hardly seems worthwhile to put out a new collection with no other purpose than to omit it.
So what should you get instead?
If you are interested in Lewis's shorter works, my best advice is to get "Essay Collection and Other Short Pieces", which, as of the time of this writing, is available from Amazon UK but not Amazon US. That collection consists of about 130 short works by Lewis. The works in that collection are mostly, but not exclusively, Christian.
If your interest is restricted to Lewis' works on Christianity, and your budget or enthusiasm does not run to "Essay Collection and Other Short Pieces", then my second-best advice is to get any or all of the following (they don't overlap significantly, and between them they include most of Lewis's shorter Christian writings):
"God in the Dock - Essays on Theology and Ethics"*
"The World's Last Night and Other Essays"
"Christian Reflections"
"The Weight of Glory and Other Addresses"
* Be careful - there is a UK Fontana paperback lurking about called "God in the Dock - Essays on Theology" that is substantially shorter than the "God in the Dock - Essays on Theology and Ethics" collection. A full version of "God in the Dock - Essays on Theology and Ethics" was published in the UK under the title "Undeceptions - Essays on Theology and Ethics".

Lots of great stuff.

While this collection may be much the same as God in the Dock, as the reviewer below says (several essays seemed fresh to me), it has been out for almost 40 years. Since the publishers have probably retired, and the statute of limitations on greed has run out by now, I'll review the book on its own merits. (If it's novelty you're looking for, try the brilliant, humorous, and sometimes quirky Lewis letters collections that Harper San Francisco printed last year. Practically no one seems to have read them, and they delighted me for a month or two.)

Seeing Eye is not a New Age revision of C. S. Lewis, as the title might make you think, but a motley collection of thirteen mostly thoughtful, deep, and iconoclastic essays. Some sound as if they began as a school assignment -- "Can we have something on ethics or Christianity and culture?" and then Lewis attacks the assigned topic with his usual clarity of thought and erudition, usually taking it, and us, somewhere unexpected and deeply revealing. "The Funeral of Great Myth" gives a (possibly premature) encomium, with measured appreciation and skepticism, on the myth of evolution (in the trans-scientific sense) that dominated late 19th and 20th Century thought. "Historicism" is a highly useful analysis of the meaning of history, or whether history has a meaning. Lewis' essay on the Psalms is included; though I think it better read with his book on the subject. (Lewis was not a fideist, and gives the Psalms what some might feel is rough treatment.) The essay "Petitionary prayer: a problem without an answer" considers two types of request to God in Scripture: those that add "your will be done," and those that do not. Lewis considers whether our timidity in prayer derives from true humility, or lack of faith, and whether the Bible promises more than God delivers from prayer, and decides (with commendable honesty) that he doesn't know. Lewis also writes "on futility," on Christianity and culture (another foundational piece of thinking), subjectivism (an early defense of what he calls the "tao" in his prophetic Abolition of Man), and religious language (scattering insight and understanding like my yellow lab scatters river water after a swim).

"Modern Theology and Biblical Criticism," elsewhere called "Elephants and Fernseed," in which Lewis attacks skeptical New Testament scholarship, may be the most brilliant and (for some) helpful piece of all. If you haven't read it, this essay alone is worth the price of several heftier volumes. As I show in my new book, Why the Jesus Seminar can't find Jesus, and Grandma Marshall Could, modern critics continue to repeat the errors Lewis describes. His essay therefore continues to be not merely useful, but indespensible, if you find yourself bamboozled by the likes of John Crossan, Elaine Pagels, Marcus Borg, or Bishop Spong. (Though of course I also recommend my own book.)

If you haven't read these essays and feed deeply on the truth herein, and this is a convenient edition for you, be sure to acquire a copy.

Thoughtful and intelligent

This collection C.S. Lewis' essays contain many deep thoughts on some very specific subjects. In this collection, essays spend time comparing Christianity and Culture, Christianity and Literature, and many more of the less than fundamental aspects of Christianity. He proves his depth of knowledge in the works by citing numerous references in each essay. This book was not intended for the pleasure reader. The content is very specific and Lewis refers to a plethora of people and works that may be unknown to many people.

FEELING NOSTALGIC

I grew up in England and Enid Blyton was read by every little girl and those not so little. I was delighted to find her on Amazon and promptly ordered several books for my 6yr. old granddaughter. She loves the short stories and we will be starting the chapter books soon. We will definitely be ordering more as her reading advances. Enid Blyton was one of my favorite authors while growing up. Some of her stories are a bit dated now and very English "boarding school?" but that does not interfere with the excitement of the story. So glad I found these books on Amazon.

Great Photographs and Historical Synopsis

The cover says it all: "The guide that shows you what others only tell you." Each page is illustrated with breathtaking shots of Churches, Mountains, Beaches, City streets, or great works of art. Another remarkable feature of this guide is the detailed history given to each town or monument or region listed. It's a little shy on maps, however, because although there are detailed guides of certain sections of the city of Barcelona showing buildings, streets, and recommended walking cultural iteneraries, there is no good map of the entire city on one leaf. It also leaves a bit to be desired in the "rest of catalonia" category. For example, only a short vignette is given for the fine Roman city of Taragonna. Overall, I'd recommend this guide to anyone planning to visit Barcelona.

Loved Barcelona

I really liked the Eye Witness travel guide for Barcelona. It made it very easy to find sites and I love having all the pictures so you can determine if this is a site you actaully want to see. But I do wish that there was a top 10 list of places that you absolutely need to see. You never want to leave a city and think that you missed seeing something very important.

A good book on Tomcat 7

This is actually the third Apress series book I have read, and I continue to be impressed. But a potential buyer should know the following; Most of these books are not for the novice looking to start on a technology. That is very true for Apache Tomcat 7.

We use Apache for our production environment at work, and have some significant experience with it. This book has been a great resource for looking a bit deeper in to the inner workings of Tomcat, and is an excellent resource as we prepared for moving to Tomcat 7. In fact, the publication of the book happily coincided with our planned upgrade to Apache 7, so we were able to use the book as a mechanism to review and consider how we would deploy the new production environment. For our more senior web administrators, this was an excellent review. For those of us in senior management positions, this was a good primer on the capabilities of the web site.

I tend to enjoy the Apress format, and Vukotic and Goodwill followed this as I found in previous books. There are good examples in the book, but it will not force you to follow exercises. You are expected to read this and comprehend. I found it beneficial to work in a server VM while reading the book so some of the more interesting elements of the book could be followed and played with.

I have one small complaint; As a Netbeans user, I would prefer more examples using that IDE. But the book uses Eclipse. I totally understand the fact that many Java developers prefer Eclipse to Netbeans. And it is impossible to cover all IDE, just as its unrealistic to use a simple text editor. I just have to plug Netbeans for my own interest.

This book had some great chapters in it. I particularly found interesting the JNDI chapter. Again, this is a great resource for a production team. As we upgraded to Tomcat 7 we implemented some interesting ideas discussed in this book between our development and production environments.

Be warned, this is not a book for the novice. You will need to understand Java technology and web based application environments. But you do not need to be a full blown subject matter expert. This was a good book for reviewing the principals of the Tomcat and learning how it works in the latest version.

If you are preparing to upgrade to Tomcat 7, this is a good resource. If you are preparing to use Tomcat 7 for a Java application for work or school or personal use, this is a good resource.
There are many books that start off well, and then drop of a chasm in Chapter 2. This book does not. Its stays consistent through the discussion and I think meets the need for the technology. You won't learn Java in this book. You will learn to deploy and manage Java applications using Tomcat 7, as well as other elements of Web programming.

The bottom line; this is a good book and I would recommend it for the working web developer or manager expected to use Tomcat 7 for their development/production environments.

Great beginner to intermediate coverage

This book really provided great beginner to intermediate coverage of Tomcat 7.

This book is probably not for people who are intimately familiar with previous versions of Tomcat, most of the sections are really "lay of the land" or "here is how this works" in nature. I purchased this book as a companion to setting up my first Tomcat instance. Before purchasing this, I was able to muddle through getting a "hello world" application running, but I still had a number of unanswered questions regarding setup, contexts, configurations and the like. Happily, this book helped me answer most of them.

Not all of the sections were of interest/importance to me, but "Apache Tomcat 7" has saved me much more than the cost of the book in hours saved. Much better than reading through hundreds of incomplete blog postings and mailing list responses on Tomcat setup and configuration.

Overall, it's a fine resource and companion for getting things going.

Good for beginners

I believe that I would have found this book a solid resource if I were looking to get familiar with Tomcat for the first time. I am not complaining, because my expectations were no higher than what I received. If you have been working with Tomcat for more than a decade, don't bother with this. If you are looking for a diff of Tomcat 6.x to Tomcat 7, this is definitely not it. If you are a newbie looking for a comprehensive entry point, then I would say this book would serve you well.

Robert M. McManus is the McCoy Associate Professor of Leadership Studies and Communication at the McDonough Leadership Center at Marietta College in Ohio. Caveat Lector!

Caveat Lector! Carandini spins quite a tall tale in this book...but that's all it is—a work of fiction. Readers with a serious interest in early Rome are advised to read T.P Wiseman's review of this book in The Classical Journal ("Carandini's handsome little book offers no more than an enjoyable fantasy,") and Wiseman's longer expose of Carandini's other (Italian-language) books, "Reading Carandini," in The Journal of Roman Studies, which more closely examines Carandini's methodology (such as it is) and his personal motivations for advancing his idiosyncratic notions. Readers interested in rigorous history (as opposed to sheer fantasy) will find more substance in Cornell's The Beginnings of Rome and Wiseman's Remus: A Roman Myth.

A different sort of Roman scholarship

I gave "Rome, Day One" three stars with a heavy heart, because the book IS interesting. Having read anglo historians on ancient Rome, I have found it refreshing to be able to read an Italian archeological perspective and, besides, the often too dismissive historian view of Roman ancient tradition is unconvincing. Andrea Carandini believes that there is a structured core of truth about the Remus and Romulus story of the foundation of Rome, and he describes, with more detail than anybody else I've read, how the foundation could have happened. The illustrations are black, white and gray toned, but they are a banquet for the hungry eyes of everybody curious about how Rome really was like in the beginning. If other professional historians understood the power of illustration as Carandini does, their books would be so much better appreciated than they are!

The book has two aims: first, as stated above, to mix tradition and archeology in order to recreate the foundation of Rome, and the second is to present Rome, together with Greece, as distinct in terms of political organization from the ancient eastern states and empires, the democratic versus totalitarian roots of, respectively, the "West"and the "East" (indeed, Carandini extends this distinction to our own days in his "Conclusion", in a oversimplified manner).

The first objective is met finely, albeit with the same dismissiveness towards alternative views that historians show to the traditional account. I would like to know who thinks differently and why, and thus I probably would appreciate more Carandini's views. Instead, throughout the book, Carandini frequently reminds us that he has been excavating in the area for twenty years. Although this is not the only argument supporting his views, it feels like the number of years is very important in the matter, at least to him. It is and it is not, because one could have excavated for 40 years and end up finding little, while one luck digging season... Anyway, my point is that I would like to see more explaining and less bragging.

Another thing that bothered me is that he rarely mentions anybody else's archeological efforts, and he writes as if everything of importance have been found by him and his team. Maybe it is so, but maybe it isn't.

Finally, the author would have much helped his argument if he further clarified the comparison between early Roman foundation traditions and those that appeared after the Greek introduction of Troy, Aeneas, and other such characters in the story. He should have done it because the book is not for the specialist. This is very important because it would have supported his choice of sources for the traditional account.

Bottom line: if you like to read about the history of Rome, particularly early Rome, you must read this book, because it is so fascinating. Only be prepared for a different sort of scholarship than that of British and American historians.

Hard work if you're not an archaeologist or historian

I'm star rating this item three because I suspect it is, in fact, an excellent piece of work for its intended audience of scholars, historians and archaelogists. It's not really fair for myself - a layman just interested in the history of Rome - to grade it according to my own lack of understanding, bust Amazon requires I add a rating, so three it is...

What I will say is this, the book is somewhat mis-marketed. Everything about its layout, cover art, blurb and design suggests that the reader is in for an engaging, argumentative, perhaps journalistic style laymans book. What it actually is, however, is a rather dense archaelogical thesis that I found somewhat slow-going and very difficult to comprehend. There's no narrative here, only a lot of challenging and dry scholarly description.

Here is a brief example:

"The King Augur and in(du)perator (Ennius), who had auxiliaries and a mounted guard, was potentissimus both with the priestly order - composed of the flamines of the divine triad and the five pontifices, in addition to the vestal virgins - and with respect to the Quirites gathering in the Comitia Calata and curiata where the king stated his ius, and from which bodies his army was formed."

If you had a hard time with that sentence then you'll have a hard time with the rest of the book.

As I stated I'm only entering this review as a warning for the lay readers who may be seeking something more narrative based and engaging. From a scholars perspective, though, it seems very good - lots of fascinating maps and diagrams of the dig sites and the corresponding foundation texts are well-sourced from primary sources such as Livy, Ovid and Plutarch. Actually the last thirty or so pages of the book is the appendix of the original texts from these sources and, in my opinion, made for a more engaging read than the book itself.
