About the Author
Alan Paton, a native son of South Africa, was born in Pietermaritzburg, in the province of Natal, in 1903. Paton's initial career was spent teaching in schools for the sons of rich, white South Africans, But at thirty, he suffered a severe attack of enteric fever, and in the time he had to reflect upon his life, he decided that he did not want to spend his life teaching the sons of the rich. He got a job as principal of Diepkloof Reformatory, a huge prison school for delinquent black boys, on the edge of Johannesburg. He worked at Diepkloof for ten years, and at the end of it Paton felt so strongly that he needed a change, that he sold his life insurance policies to finance a prison-study trip that took him to Scandinavia, England, and the United States. It was during this time that he unexpectedly wrote his first published novel, Cry, the Beloved Country. It stands as the single most important novel in South African literature. Alan Paton died in 1988 in South Africa.

Chapter 1

There is a lovely road that runs from Ixopo into the hills. These hills are grass-covered and rolling, and they are lovely beyond any singing of it. The road climbs seven miles into them, to Carisbrooke; and from there, if there is no mist, you look down on one of the fairest valleys of Africa. About you there is grass and bracken and you may hear the forlorn crying of the titihoya, one of the birds of the veld. Below you is the valley of the Umzimkulu, on its journey from the Drakensberg to the sea; and beyond and behind the river, great hill after great hill; and beyond and behind them, the mountains of Ingeli and East Griqualand.

The grass is rich and matted, you cannot see the soil. It holds the rain and the mist, and they seep into the ground, feeding the streams in every kloof. It is well-tended, and not too many cattle feed upon it; not too many fires burn it, laying bare the soil. Stand unshod upon it, for the ground is holy, being even as it came from the Creator. Keep it, guard it, care for it, for it keeps men, guards men, cares for men. Destroy it and man is destroyed.

Where you stand the grass is rich and matted, you cannot see the soil. But the rich green hills break down. They fall to the valley below, and falling, change their nature. For they grow red and bare; they cannot hold the rain and mist, and the streams are dry in the kloofs. Too many cattle feed upon the grass, and too many fires have burned it. Stand shod upon it, for it is coarse and sharp, and the stones cut under the feet. It is not kept, or guarded, or cared for, it no longer keeps men, guards men, cares for men. The titihoya does not cry here any more.

The great red hills stand desolate, and the earth has torn away like flesh. The lightning flashes over them, the clouds pour down upon them, the dead streams come to life, full of the red blood of the earth. Down in the valleys women scratch the soil that is left, and the maize hardly reaches the height of a man. They are valleys of old men and old women, of mothers and children. The men are away, the young men and the girls are away. The soil cannot keep them any more.

Paton's creative and writing genius comes to a fore in Cry..

When first published in 1948 in apartheid South Africa, Cry, the Beloved Country raised more than eyebrows as a powerful book about the power of unity and an author's unflinching hope of a future where segregation no longer exists. The book summoned feelings of pride, optimism, and anticipation of a long-desired goal. But Paton's lyrical, poetic prose is not your typical run-of-the-mill anger evoking story about discrimination. The story is a humanizing experience that evokes feelings of sympathy and understanding, not hatred for a system so blatantly wrong.
In Cry, the Beloved Country, readers feel an uncanny connection to three things: the land, an old black rural priest searching in a corrupt city for his son, and an old white rural man confronting the loss of his son. All three aspects of the book are connected by a common thread. And a great thing about the book is that Paton doesn't feel the need to build up to the emotional climax by setting the readers against a well defined antagonist, or even an antagonist at all; on a micro-scale, the story is a moving tribute to man's inherent dignity; on a macro-scale, the themes and plethora of symbols are applied to man's all-too mortal nature.
This book is also a can't-miss for any fans of poetry who want to read a good work of prose. As the New Republic puts it, Cry, the Beloved Country is "the greatest novel to emerge out of the tragedy of South Africa, and one of the best novels of our time." I would be inclined to agree.

My all-time favorite

Of the (literally) thousands of books I have read in my life, this is still my favorite. I first read it as a freshman in high school (in 1960, when apartheid was still the law of South Africa), and the sheer beauty of the language took away my breath. The words were so powerful that I memorized many portions of the text, just so I would be able to repeat the words aloud whenever I wished. When JFK was assassinated in 1963, I gave a presentation to my senior English class, and began it with the section of this book that starts: "There is not much talking now, a silence falls on them all...." The class was mesmerized at Mr. Paton's eerily appropriate words, and tears were shed. I've always encouraged my own children to read and they are almost as voracious with books as their dad. Needless to say, this is one of the books I highly recommend to them, because of the excellent writing, and I highly recommend it to you for the same reason.

It's on my Top 10

How much can a man love his country? How much can he love his son? His God? Can justice prevail when man cannot? What is forgiveness? Redemption? Grace? To consider all these elements in one novel is not possible. Or is it?

"Cry, the Beloved Country" is all these things and more. It is forgiveness writ large. It is agape love in the doing. It is the story of two fathers, each with a son. One son is the victim of apartheid and is lost. The other is also a victim of apartheid but of the other side. He seeks to find a way to make things better, to make things right. The lost one kills the seeking one. One is African, the other is Afrikaaner, and therein lies the difference and the ultimate. This difference, this ultimate, this absolute are what drove Alan Paton in the writing of South Africa's most famous, most searing novel of the separation of races in all ways.

Absalom Kumalo's life is limited in all ways because he is black South African. Arthur Jarvis is an engineer and has all the privileges of white South Africa, yet he is keen on social justice and works to bring it to pass. What irony then that the one without kills the one seeking to bring justice. However, it is this very irony that brings their fathers to friendship, to a bonding of black man and white man.

Umfundisi is the black priest (not Catholic) of a simple, poor church in a village located near the home of the rich landowner and farmer, James Jarvis, who really does not know his son until he is dead. It is the getting to know his son that he connects with the African, and the father becomes the son in the ways of love and forgiveness. The umfundisi is one of my favorite characters in all literature I have read because of his humility and reverence.

This novel, published in 1948, remains as one, even today, apropos to race relations, to their very real potentials and actualities. Mutual respect, sincerity, forgiveness, and grace all come to the fore in this most magnificent, lyrical novel.

It would be on my Top 10 list of books I would take if marooned on the proverbial deserted island.

Such is the organizing principle of Alton Brown's Gear for Your Kitchen by the selfsame Alton Brown, star of Food Network's Good Eats as well as award-winning author of I'm Just Here for the Food. Brown's opening challenge is a 60-day, four phase process of ridding your kitchen of all things unused and insignificant--easy on the surface, but tough in the doing. He also includes unending side chatter about cutting corners, saving money, and actually putting good tools to work. You'll find recipes throughout, and techniques, too. Best known for his Good Eats program on the Food Network, Brown has all the colander knowledge, marketing savvy and geeky male appeal to whip up a big hit from this unwieldy but very fun macropedia of gadgetry. Splashing the word "gear" across the cover in capital letters is clearly an appeal to the male shopper. Descriptions of every conceivable pan, peeler and propane torch get their due in entries ranging from a few sentences to a few pages, depending on which items Brown considers to be absolute necessities or which are just cool to have around. (As Brown is a self-confessed java-holic, the extensive overview of coffeemakers reads as a labor of love.) There are Mr. Science type explorations of topics such as, "Why Eggs Stick So Bad," and "The Proper Way to Pack a Cooler." One hundred photographs and another 100 illustrations make sense of what, for example, a nylon fish turner or an immersion blender looks like. Lost in the mix are 25 random recipes ranging from Icebox Bran Muffins to Potato Leek Soup. Brown does his own photography but designers Galen Smith and Amy Trombat deserve credit. The layout and graphics, replete with faux handwriting in the margins and arrowed lines zipping through the text are part 1950s Sears catalogue gone art deco, part coffee-table book for George and Judy Jetson.

This led me to the sudden need to build a good set of kitchen tools in a very small kitchen.

This book really focuses a lot on Alton Brown’s “No Unitasker” mentality (except the fire extinguisher) and has helped me to build a streamlined and multi-functional cooking arsenal that is both highly useful and fits in my limited space. Not only does this book help immensely in choosing the right tool for multiple tasks or decide on whether you need a particular type of pot or not it also helps you to not purchase something you may have thought you wanted/needed but really don’t.

I don’t have the space for a tool I will rarely use. Alton really sets out a clear guide here on what tools can do the same job for you while doing other jobs as well. He also goes into detail about things like choosing knives or the right sized cast iron skillet for your needs/skill. Daunting tasks for those of us not initiated into the secret chefs club. As I read through each section I also found that he helped me to understand the subtle differences between tools that often to the inexperienced seem almost identical. Understanding the mysterious world of the chef knife seems much less confusing now that Alton has laid out the basics on the various terms that salesmen and packaging bombard you with.

The end result from perusing through Alton Browns thoughts on kitchen tools, for me at least, has been a very functional kitchen in a very small space that has made the process of learning to cook real food with real ingredients a lot less frightening, much much easier and far less expensive than if I had just gone to my local store and started buying everything I thought I needed. Not to mention it’s really helped me to find the fun in cooking.

Very good

I will get straight to the point- the only reason I didn't give this book 5 stars is that it doesn't give exact product recommendations for everything. What I mean is this- for every product the book walks you through a list of characteristics - you want XYZ you don't want ABC. Then for about 60% of kitchen items there is a specific recommendation " purchase the cyberdyne systems widget". For hte other 40% there is not a specific product recommendation. I would understand if you wanted to give no particular recs for whatever reason (not wanting to seem like a corporate shill or whatever) and that would be fine. But if you cross that river, give them for everything please!

If you are a nerd it has a lot of background info you will find interesting about the history of various kitchen implements and how they are constructed/out of what materials. There are also a few recipes spaced throughout that Good Eats fans will recognize.

If you want to know how to shop through a large kitchen supply store for what you want, this is a good book. If you want a buzzfeed style list of things to buy and where to get them than it is less good. I took it down a star for this as if you make the majority of your purchases online like I do you can't pick up and feel/look at a bunch of angles /inspect the product which you would want to do after reading this.

great for a fan of the show

If you are a fan of Good Eats, much of what's in this book will be quite familiar, with almost every episode having demonstrated the use of a kitchen gadget. If you've memorized every episode then you probably don't need this book (but will probably still want it). For the rest of us, looking for clear information on what to buy for our kitchens, this is the way to go.

What is especially nice is that this book is not a list of brands/model numbers to purchase. Instead the focus is on what to look for when purchasing. It may seem excessive to have 4 pages on what bowl to purchase, but plenty of detail is given to allow you to be an informed shopper. For those used to standing in a store staring at shelves of appliances wondering which one to buy, this book will help guide you through the whys and hows of kitchen gadgets.

The summary of what is good:

- helpful kitchen tips/techniques/terminology
- helpful pictures
- a smattering of recipes spread throughout

What you might be missing:

About the Author
A graduate of Columbia University's Graduate School of Journalism, Ian Stewart has reported from more than 40 countries. At the age of twenty-seven, he was appointed bureau chief of UPI's South Asia bureau. He later joined the Associated Press and was named bureau chief of its West Africa bureau in 1998. He lives in Berkeley, California.

Good But Loose

The puzzles/questions in the book are challenging but several times the author is too vague in his description and leaves the reader wondering what exactly the author is asking. Thus, the reader is left with several ways to interpret the puzzle/question. However, it is fun and I would still recommend it to help with critical thinking skills and nurturing creative thinking/ideas.

Another puzzlebook Classic!!

I purchased this book a short time ago and am slowly getting into it. It is sure to become one of the great puzzle books. I have been interested in puzzles for many years and have a collection of over 350 "puzzle books" I have no hesitation in ranking this book right up there with "Cyclopedia of Puzzles" by Sam Loyd, "The Moscow Puzzles" by Boris Kordemsky" and "536 Puzzles & Curious Problems" by H.E.Dudeney. Each in it's own way; Loyd's was an innovation and a classic in it's time,Dudeney's and Kordemsky's were very traditional with great variety. Moscovich gives us a whole new approach in types of puzzles and a huge leap in the incorporation of art and graphics into the world of puzzles. The greatest puzzle of all to me is how this book could be produced and sold in the price range of a novel with no artwork,color or illustrations. On behalf of puzzle enthusiasts everywhere I would like to commend the author and publishers. Anyone who likes puzzles will love this book.

Riddled with errors

As I dipped into this book I became more and more annoyed. It has many, many mistakes, of all kinds, in it. Even in presenting well-known puzzles the author manages to make serious errors. Here are a few of the mistakes that I noticed:
(Puzzle 307) Morley's theorem is (to quote the late H.S.M. Coxeter) "one on the most surprising theorems in elementary geometry", but Moscovich manages to get the diagram wrong! The triangle which he picks out does not even look equilateral!
(Puzzle 772) For the well-known puzzle of passing a cube through a smaller cube the author begins his explanation: "If you hold a cube so that one corner points directly toward you, its edges outline a hexagon. It then becomes obvious that the cube has ample space for a square hole slightly larger than one of its faces." There is even a picture of a hexagon with a square superimposed on it. Although a cube can be passed through a (slightly) smaller cube in this way, it is well known that the optimum solution does not have the edges of the hole parallel to the space diagonal of the cube.
(Puzzle 990) Weighing from 1 to 40 grams using weights on one side of a balance only. Moscovich says "you must have the weights 1, 2, 4, 8, 16 and 32 grams". Not so. For example, 1, 2, 4, 8, 9 and 16 would be ok.
I began to compile a list of errors in this book, but I gave up when I had accumulated over 30, having read, I would estimate, about a quarter of the book.
The book has a "Difficulty Index" which should be renamed the "Difficult Index". You have to know the exact title of a puzzle and its level (from 1 to 9), in order to find it again using this index.

Cosmic Orientation Guide

This is an excellent resource for the beginner. A series of 40 exercises designed for the observational astronomer... night-by-night (thus knowing the sky in 40 nights.) Mr. Schaaf expalins the moon's phases towards the beginning of the book with an excellent explanation of the Earth's movements in relation to the sun and the moon's orbit around earth. He tells you exactly what to look for and, more importantly, why you want to look for certain features/objects (the lesssons build upon one another.)
It's important to point out that you don't need a telescope to complete the lessons, but I still would recommend using one... it will enhance your experience and appreciation.

A great beginner's book to the night sky

I've always been interested in the night sky, and after reading a number of magazine articles, I thought it was time to learn more about the stars and galaxies above.
"40 Nights to Knowing the Sky" will help any adult learn more about the night sky and how to prepare for that first look through a telescope.
Each chapter is well written and easy to understand. The book has a lot of reference material, including pictures and drawings, to use well into the next century.
If you're beginning a hobby in amateur astronomy, this book will be a great addition to your library.

Great general information book

This is an excellent "primer" book for beginning astronomers, or anyone interested in the night sky. It begins with very general concepts and builds on them each succesive night. Even if you have no knowledge of astronomy, after completing this book, you'll be able to understand the motions of the planets and stars. As well as where to locate fabulous sights to see when outdoors any night.

About the Author
Camille Bateman Haight, was born and raised in Sandy, Utah. She was born the fourth child in a family with eight children. “I grew up in a loving home full of great people. My parents taught me great things, among them was first a love of God, second a love of family, and third a belief in honing and using one’s talents.” From a very early age her father taught her a love of literature. She was encouraged to read books on her summer vacations, and write a book report on each one. Her father pushed her to learn new vocabulary words regularly to further her foundation. Her grandmother also had that same love of classic novels and poetry she read to young children at elementary schools and loved to read to all her grandchildren. Her love and influence just added to Camille’s fondness of good story telling. Her love of a good story can be seen within each chapter of her books. “A good story should pull at you from within, and bring forth a bond between you and the Characters as if they truly are you best friend or most hated foe. A good story will make you laugh out loud, or have tears slipping down your cheeks. A story should feel real, and engage you on every level,” Says Camille. Today Camille lives in southern Utah with her husband and young children, where she continues to pour herself into her stories. “I will write until I have nothing left, or until my fingers give up on me.” She said, knowing that for her, a good story is at the core of so many of life’s memorable moments.

Great Read! Can't wait for book 2!

This book has an amazing way of drawing you in. You feel like you are right there with the characters as they unwrap the intriguing mystery that surrounds Collett. It forges new friendships, kindles a romance within your heart, and holds you in suspense and terror with a shocking conclusion. I can't wait to see what comes next from C. B. Haight

Loved The Story Line

You can't help but fall in love with each of the characters and get swept away by the story. Its one of those that you hate to see it end and are eager for the release of the next book.

Forgotten Enemy by C.B. Haight is the first book in a series called The Powers of Influence. Cade is a werewolf and part of an organization entirely focused on protecting people from paranormal threats. When Roderick, one of his close friends and ally, asks that Cade look into one of Roderick’s employees, Cade is enthralled by his charge for protection. Collett is a seemingly skittish woman who doesn’t remember any of her past and is on the run for her life.  Creatures of evil regularly track her down and attempt to kill her and Collett doesn’t even know why. Cade, Roderick and his family work together to both keep Collett safe, but also figure out who she is. Collett is also slowly discovering powers that have been lying hidden and, on top of everything else, she must figure out how to manage these powers and determine what they might mean.  Together, they all must figure out who is hunting Collett and why. As the clues begin to fall into place, Cade and Collett also work to cope with their quickly changing relationship.

I really enjoyed this story. It was a little slow in terms of the action, but this allows the reader to savor the characters and the growing relationships. The romance grew organically and I really liked that. There were a lot of characters, but they all added something to the story in terms of actions or just information about the relationship between all the characters. I also liked that in addition to Cade and Collett’s point of views, the reader gets the point of view of the predator. It helps build up to the revelation near the end of the story, which I really liked. However, I really disliked how the story ends. Because the plot moves a little slowly and there are going to be more books in the series, the main mystery of the story was never resolved. Some information was revealed to at least keep the story going, but I really wish there was more. It almost felt as if the characters were really in the same place that they were at the beginning of the story.  This is frustrating because the slow pace and development of relationships can really cause the reader to become attached to the characters and how their lives progress.

The narration by Mikeal Narramore was pretty good. I did sometimes have a difficult time keeping track of who was speaking because some of the characters sounded similar, but over all he did a good job. The production quality was good as well. I would recommend this novel to anyone who likes a good long lasting mystery and paranormal romances.

Simply the best chemistry book I know of.

Many moons ago during my high school years overseas, this was THE required chemistry text. Now that I need to reboot my memory so to speak before enrolling in college chemistry next semester, I could think of no other resource to bring me back up to speed. It's a solid text that has been in use for over fifty years. If you need access to solid chemistry teaching, built on simple but pertinent facts ,this is your book. It is not one of the current "process-driven" books, but a good old fashioned "meat-and-potatoes" resource ,thorough, unambiguous, and orderly. Just follow along and use the loaded questions section, but you would do well to check up-to-date sources for hazard standards and classifications for the practicals. This book would be the perfect gift for your budding scientist and should be in every scientist's resource library.

THE school Chemistry text.

Arnold Holderness taught me chemistry, at Archbishop Holgate's Grammar School in the 50's. He used the forerunner of this text, as did most other high schools in England at that time. He was a superb teacher who knew his subject, and his writing showed it. I appreciate him now far more than I ever did. i still have his old text.
