The best of Minecraft books

My son loves these books and looks forward to each new release with explosive eagerness. Mere eagerness is not enough. This is a boy who does not like to read, but he does love Minecraft. I bought him the first of Cheverton's books hoping a story about his favorite game would encourage him to read. The books, and we have all of them, have not only inspired my son to read, he has also started writing a series of short stories that tie into Gamenight999's world. We have purchased other Minecraft books, but Mark's are by far the best and the only ones my son will read.
Thank you Mark, for inspiring my son in so many ways.

It's amazing how Gameknight is so brave, so protective of his friends and family, willing to be their shield and to fight their battles. The entire series of 15 books is so touching, so inspiring. Especially Confronting the Dragon, it shows that size does not matter of courage - Herder's world, full of bullying, is changed completely by Sticher, who refuses to let others tease him, Gameknight, who knows that school bullies were the same, and himself:Choosing to refuse to back down and saving the victory for the good in the Battle of the Source with his loyal friends, the wolves. There is a lot of friendship, a lot of courage, boldness, fearlessness, caring, grief, all displayed by Gameknight999…

Simply because he chooses not to give up.

Important messages are given in this book, as are in the characters. In System Overload, Cobbler, an NPC child, has much negative in him. But the message at the front of the book, "When you focus on bad things, sometimes that is all you will see. If you look for the good, you will find it. The trick is to part the dark curtains of despair, so that the great things around you - like family and friends - can shine through."

It inspires me so much. I also love how all of Gameknight's main friends have their own unique abilities : Stitcher can see the good in anything, despite her size, Hunter can make you realize you are braver than you think, Digger can show you how to be a great leader, Herder connects with animals, protecting them with his life, and gets through bullying with bravery, and Crafter can share with you the good of the world, words of wisdom, and is the best friend, according to Gameknight, that you could ever have.

And Gameknight? I wouldn't dare forget.

Showing the others that they are far better than they imagine, he plants in the NPCs courage and hope, sharing with them his refusal to give up. They all know him well, and follow his footsteps along the path of greatness. They know who he is, as well as his personality, bravery, and courage. He has a solution to every problem and does everything to protect his friends. He sacrifices so much to restore peace in Minecraft. Minecraft is the roots of the tree and the ground, Gameknight is the trunk. His friends and fellow users and family are the strong branches, all connected to him in a unique way. They hold on to the leaves, the fabric of Minecraft. And of course, Herobrine is the dark winter, the saw, the blade. That can be stopped. When the winter comes, leaves are ripped off, and some branches fall. Although this results in tragedy, Mimecraft nearly falling to destruction and his friends dying, Gameknight, the trunk, remains strong and sturdy, until the winter, or the saw, or Herobrine, goes off, until next time. No matter how many times he comes, Gameknight is always ready.

His friends help him understand Minecraft everything that it has in store for him. In return, he shares his plans, wisdom, courage, fearlessness, bravery, a refusal to step down, and his entire world of understanding.

And he will stay strong and brave, like an immortal tree, forever.

This is an inspiring book, which makes it diffrent from others. It actually has a story that can affect you, and people's thoughts on bullying. When Herder was trapped insode Herobrine, he did everything he could to bring him back. He could not lose him. For kids who bully others, they are only trying to lay their own problems out on other people. But people like Gameknight won't let that happen, and can stand up, like a shield for others.

The strip-mining of human nature

Written at the cusp of the 'consumer revolution', this book is both a quaint historical piece and a prophesy of what was to come. The tangential thesis of the book is that by the mid-fifties, the standard problems in capitalism -- those of production and distribution of goods -- were solved, but that this introduced another problem: all of these goods must be consumed. So, it became necessary to step up the techniques used to market these goods.
Advertising was nothing new, but the psychological intricacy and sophistication in it was ratcheted up significantly. Using Freud, Jung, and whatever other foundation proved workable, social scientists and psychoanalysts honed their skills to develop an ever-growing repertoire of tricks that would induce us all to spend and consume at ever-higher levels.
Two things make the book relevant today: 1) nothing has changed either in the economic situation or in the techniques, except that both have become even more intense (two thirds of the 2002 U.S. GNP depends on consumer spending); and 2) no other book has yet come forward to do a better job at showing, in great anecdotal detail and for a broad audience, what depth marketing is all about.

A deep look into the mind....

The Hidden Persuaders explores the dark world of advertising and the effects it has upon our minds. Even though it was written originally in 1957, most of its material is still relevant today. At first, one may be lead to the conclusion Vance Packard has gone off the far end with his accusations of subliminal mind control, but he provides so much factual data you finally come to realize this isn't any joking matter. Everyone should read this book, at least to become familiar with its theme, and to increase personal awareness of the underlying messages our minds are exposed to every day. Packard will help you understand virtually hundreds of ways corporations get you to give away your hard earned money readily. He explains not only how companies make you tick, but why they make you tick. After reading the book, you will never watch another commercial or listen to another advertisement the same.

What is being described by Packard is the evolution of a systematic relationship between merchandisers of America's then-booming manufacturing industries who teemed up with Madison Avenue-style advertising firms, who themselves were backed by a network of behavioral scientists. As described by Packard, this network not only developed novel and creative ways of reaching into the psyche of its intended target audiance to tap into hidden motivations; but in the process of turning us all into more compliant consumers, so shifted the values of the entire society that they changed American society for all time. Today many of us have virtually succumbed our natural "reality" to a phony existance based upon presenting an image of ourselves to our peers that is actually based upon media and market-generated values. Once we understand the process that created this vast consumer culture, with all it's attendant neuroses, we can then begin to fashion for ourselves a strategy for recovering our basic humanity. What is being described in THE HIDDEN PERSUADERS, is the origins of a system to manipulate us out of that humanity.

Obviously, there are some surprising parts to a modern eye--- especially the parts that seem a tad classist, but he wrote this in ye olden times so take it with a grain of salt. The overall themes were interesting, especially the section on behavior. It's fun to read this as it is a snapshot of the philosophies of a Boston-based scholar in Civil War times, no more and no less.

If you want to learn marketing, you have to come to Kotler. He is both a pioneer of modern marketing and the leading popularizer of the field. His Principles of Marketing is ubiquitous in business schools throughout the world and he has two other textbooks for advanced classes. Now he gives readers a new way to tap his vast knowledge. The book covers the full range of marketing management and, of course, addresses Internet marketing. Readers won't find the mathematical depth or theoretical rigor that make Kotler's textbook an unpleasant surprise to students expecting an easy course. In fact, this book assumes readers will have a good deal of business experience. It's a terrific capsule of Kotler's marketing savvy. The most significant drawback is that Kotler shows only positive models of successful marketing. This is fine for illustrating general principles and techniques, but it doesn't teach the judgment required to tell good applications from foolish ones. The upshot is that uncritical readers may discover that a little learning is a dangerous thing. Despite these qualifications, this is a fine book on marketing for a general audience.

Awful Kindle version

As some other readers mentioned before, this book is strangely distanced (or ignorant?) of the markets springing from technological and communication development of the last twenty years or so. Funny thing is, the Kindle edition of his book maintains this technological ignorance. For your 'entertainment' Kindle version does not contain table of contents or pagination. And it is a big book, mind you! Then, most of the 'exhibits', (sample texts from referenced sources used to describe what the book is trying to convey) are pasted in, in a random fashion into the main text. There is no way to jump between these, either. A book prepared as (un)prepared as this one could hardly 'create, win and dominate' any market, but you know, Mr. Kotler is a 'brand'. With all the goodies and baddies you could connect to that abstract term.

This book epitomizes an economic outlook fit for this age of unabated capitalism. Oh, it is concise and well written. So well in fact, that as a consumer, it even hurts to read and learn. Probably hugely inspiring to marketing younglings, but... somehow ethically and morally shallow. Then again, it is not a book on ethics or moral. It's on marketing! ;)

Classic 20th century concepts. Very little 21st century marketing. Quick read for beginners but nothing new in here.

This was the textbook for a marketing class I took in Spring 2015. With the cost of textbooks these days, 5 stars to the professor for not using a $250 textbook! The book itself is a very quick and easy read, though quite outdated. Not a lot on 21st century social media, email, or internet marketing, but overall the fundamental 20th century concepts are timeless and priceless... especially for only $10! Not a book for advanced marketing students or professionals, but if you want a crash course on the basics, this will do it.

A Thick Stew of Marketing Theory

Phil Kotler's neurons have cataloged and cross-indexed a vast library of marketing theory. Kotler on Marketing is a central compendium of big marketing ideas in my opinion. It is dense and at sometimes overwhelming, but the mental workout is well worth the effort. It's hard to know where to begin, even though this book is only 220 pages long. So in brief, here are some of my salient gleanings:

- One can market products, people, places, ideas, experiences and organizations.
- The central purpose of marketing is demand management through exchanges, relationships and networks.
- You can dominate markets through higher quality, better service, lower prices, higher market share, customization, product innovation, and exceeding customer expectations. It also pays to enter high-growth markets.
- Peter Drucker said, "the aim of marketing is to make selling superfluous." (This explains the conflict between marketing and sales that I see so often.)
- There are three levels of marketing: 1) Responsive Marketing; 2) Anticipative Marketing; 3) Need-Shaping Marketing (i.e., "I don't serve markets. I create them." - Akio Morita, Sony).
- Marketing management includes research, segmentation and targeting, positioning, branding, balancing the marketing mix of the 4 Ps, implementing, and controlling. (Implementation is the big challenge.)
- You can segment markets by demographic, benefit, occasion, usage level, and lifestyle.
- Marketing audits include a survey of demographics, the economy, the environment, technology, political changes, and cultural forces.
- Pay close attention to managing relationships with employees, distributors, suppliers, marketing agencies, logistics agencies, the press, and the community at large.
- Recruiting, selecting, hiring, training, motivating, compensating and evaluating salespeople is the task of Directors of Sales and Marketing.
- Focus on getting customers, keeping customers, and growing customers.
- Work to increase margin, market share and customer satisfaction.

These snowflakes are just the tip of the iceberg. Remember that this book presents theory; not practice, so don't expect a cookbook. Additionally, Kotler's work does not provide solid counsel for the Internet and the disruptive innovation it is bringing. Still in all, if you are a marketer, Kotler on Marketing is a must have. It will get your wheels spinning and help organize your thoughts.

Nada Dabbagh is Professor and Director of the Division of Learning Technologies in the College of Education and Human Development at George Mason University. She holds a Ph.D. in Instructional Systems Design from The Pennsylvania State University and a Master s of Science in Math Methodology and Operations Research from Columbia University. Her research explores the pedagogical ecology of technology mediated learning environments with the goal of understanding the social and cognitive consequences of learning systems design. .
