Fine Scholarship, yet flaws remain

The joint venture between Norman Davies and Roger Moorhouse has yielded some extremely fine scholarship that charts the history of one of Europe's more colourful cities, creuly exposed to the full weight of the twentieth century's barbarity. Indeed, as a piece of historical research, the book stands out as exemplary and can easily present itself as the standard text on an overall history of the "Island City" in either its English, German or Polish format. The authors should also be commended for providing an excellent synthesis, in an intelligible format, of Vratislavia between the Piast Dynasty to the Thirty Years War, not only in a regional, but also a European context. As the city, as the entire province of Silesia, has been subject to heated historical debates, the book succeeds, for the most part, in providing an even-handed account of the area's history.
In doing so, however, a major flaw of the book is exposed. In attempting to present the most multicultural side of the Island City to the world, the authors do not delve deep enough into the German roots of Vratislavia. This is exemplified in the rather paltry account of the Ostkolonisierung and the initial arrival of German settlement in Silesia. While mentioned in passing (and even accorded a map as an appendix), the city seems to just suddenly transform into a "German city". As this migration formed the basis of 600-700 years of the city's history, this pivotal migration could have been presented in much more detail. Second, German culture's unique Silesian expression is not delved into as carefully as one could hope for - especially in a book dedicated to its bastion. Very little is mentioned about local (German) traditions and culture. This is extremely unfortunate as the Silesian variant of German culture has been, through the 1945-47 expulsion, completely exterminated - a book about the history of Breslau should have chronicled its cultural idiosyncrasies given that they were so suddenly and inhumanely erased. Perhaps a more exact overview of Breslau as a city - for example, explaining the difference between each city district - could have given a true feeling of how life was like in the now extinct Breslau. In short, had Davies and Moorhouse, in their final version, paid as much attention to German Silesian culture as they did to its Polish and Jewish counterpart, a much more accurate picture of Breslau as a city, and Silesia as a region, could have been gleaned.
Finally, the authors also delve into some extremely dangerous "suffering comparisons" between Polish and German expulsions between 1945-47, with the book seeming to insinuate that Polish expellees had a "tougher time' - not only because of longer periods of transit during expulsion, but also because Polish expellees, in the ruins of Wroclaw, were deprived of organising expellee organisations. This questionable approach to a still painful chapter in European history, unfortunately, depreciates the book's otherwise fine record of portraying an even-handed history of the city. A fine historian such as Davies should have known better.
Despite such critique, however, "Microcosm" is an excellent historical survey that sheds some much needed light on one of Europe's more fascinating cities.

Great book, excellent 'defense' if you can call it that, of the Slavic roots of the city, and Davies does a great job near the end of the book in the transformation of Breslau to Wroclaw. However, in the sweeping history, he does skirt a bit on the details of the cultural importance of each stage of the city. Between chapters the city's cultural makeup just 'changes', often inexplicably. The book is very detailed once it has been established which 'era' is being described, and it's detailed enough for someone like me to forget the details of the last chapter halfway into the present one.

Microcosm

Norman Davies has a great knack for fantastic subjects. What can be better than a microhistory of Central Europe on an example of a city that was Czech, Polish, Czech, Austrian, German and now is Polish! Also Wroclaw/Breslau happens to be my home town and it was a great place to live in the 70's with just about everybody an immigrant, an America in miniature under communist rule.
Norman Davies also has a great knack for writing his books assuming that you already know a lot of history. Sometimes I do not and he leaves me there high and dry grasping for facts.
This book gives you a continuity in European history where everything changes and still stays the same.

About the Author

Dr. Montgomery's research interests are in motor neurophysiology of the basal ganglia, pathophysiology of Parkinson's disease and in the therapeutic mechanisms of action of Deep Brain Stimulation. His works spans human and non-human primate research and computational modeling and simulations. He received his MD degree from the State University of New York at Buffalo and studied neurophysiology under Gary Allen Ph.D. in the Laboratories of Sir John Eccles. Dr. Montgomery's clinical practice is in Movement Disorders and Deep Brain Stimulation. He has been involved in Deep Brain Stimulation research and clinical practice since 1997.

Best introductory text on aerospace medicine

This textbook serves as the introductory text to most physicians working in aerospace medicine worldwide and is edited by one of the legends in the field (most of us simply refer to the book as "DeHart"). It is clear to read, easy to understand, and provides a historical background as well for the field of aerospace medicine. It is somewhat biased towards aerospace medicine in the United States, in particular in discussions regarding some life support equipment in military aircraft, but it also notes policies and equipment from other countries as well. The discussion on the Orlan spacesuits used on board the International Space Station, for example, is very good for an introductory text. If you are interested in only one narrow field of aerospace medicine, there are certainly specific texts out there for most every aspect you can imagine. About the Author
Anthony Mancuso is a corporations and limited liability company expert. He graduated from Hastings College of Law in San Francisco, is a member of the California State Bar, writes books and software in the fields of corporate and LLC law, and studies advanced business taxation at Golden Gate University in San Francisco. He has also been a consultant for Silicon Valley EDA (Electronic Design Automation) companies, most recently working on a C++ open-source integrated circuit database project team. He is the author of several Nolo books on forming and operating corporations (both profit and nonprofit) and limited liability companies. His titles include Incorporate Your Business, How to Form a Nonprofit Corporation (national and California editions), Form Your Own Limited Liability Company, The Corporate Records Handbook, and LLC or Corporation?. He wrote and programmed Nolo's LLC Maker and Incorporator Pro software programs, which generate state-by-state articles and other forms for organizing corporations and LLCs. His books and software have shown over a quarter of a million businesses and organizations how to form a corporation or LLC. Enough information to get my LLC created

Using the information in this book I was able to successfully create an LLC. I first purchased "Limited Liability Companies for Dummies". Good background material but it did not contain a sample operating agreement. These long and complicated agreements are the heart of LLC creation. So, I turned to Mr. Mancuso's book. He has full samples of both a member managed and manager managed LLCs. I took his form, modified for my needs and finished the job.

On the downside there are a number of areas where the text says "refer to your attorney". Part of this is the nature of the beast. While a simple LLC creation is pretty straight forward there are areas where one can get into trouble. Special allocations of profits where profits are not distributed based on ownership triggers all sorts of IRS rules. Professional help is needed here. I did not need anything like that so not a problem.

Another reviewer mentions the lack of information on Series LLCs. These are really specialized for something like a taxi company where the company is an LLC and each individual taxi is owned by a separate LLC. So if you are a big business doing fancy asset protection with series LLCs, then this book is not for you. If you want to start a small business and want the protection of an LLC, this book contains the information to get it done.

Excellent resource for those wanting to start an LLC, including many prototype forms (actual forms to be filed are state-specific). A DVD is included, allowing modification of supplied forms with a word processor. Highly recommended

I bought this book to help me become more informed about LLCs. My plan was to learn some background, then work with a lawyer to set it up. This book was so helpful and explained the process so well that I realized I could do it myself, which I did. Even if you go thru a lawyer this book will help you understand the concept, ask the right questions and set the LLC up to meet your needs.

Herbert L. Nichols, Jr., has devoted most of his business and professional life to earth-moving and heavy equipment. A longtime private consultant, he owned his own excavation and grading business in Connecticut for many years. In addition to his widely translated benchmark work Moving the Earth, he is the author of Excavator Operation, Heavy Equipment Repair, and numerous other books and manuals in the field. He is a member of the American Association of Cost Engineers, the American Institute of Mining Engineers, and the American Welding Society.

David A. Day, P.E., is a consultant with ABCO Engineering Corporation, with nearly 50 years of experience in civil engineering and construction. A graduate of Cornell University and the University of Illinois with a master's degree in construction and structures, he is the author of Construction Equipment Guide. Mr. Day is also a member of the American Society of Civil Engineers, the National Society of Professional Engineers, and the National Academy of Forensic Engineers.

A must for anyone in excavation!

Moving the Earth starts with descriptive details on land clearing, surveying, properties of rock, soil, mud, different methods to digging basements, ditching and dewatering, lanscaping, roads, blasting, tunneling, and pit operations. Each method goes into great detail on how the work is performed and how the work is recommended to be done. Chapter 11 goes through the costs and management of excavation. The last half of the book goes through all of the machines used in excavation today.
I recommend this book to anyone involved in excavation.

Excellent basic reference

I ordered the latest edition of this book for my husband, who had spent hours studying the previous one. Whether you're operating a dozer or an excavator, or even a Bobcat; transplanting trees, landscaping, making stock ponds or building roads... this is a valuable reference.
