A must-read Book.

Having listened to him on radio and on TV, I was curious to know what he had in this book. I have read it twice already and this is what I call "A collectors item". It builds your confidence to speak in public. I love the way he breaks it down to make it so easy, and I have had my first "MCship" and I would like to say to Mr. Dey, thanks for making it an eventful and interesting night. If you think you will never have to speak in public, then think again, At a PTA meeting, Church gathering, Marriage ceremonies, Naming ceremonies etc.. This is a key to open some interesting doors. Get a copy and don't lend it out to anyone.

Kafui Dey's How to MC Any Event: A Refreshing Read

Kafui Dey’s How to Mc Any Event is for all manner of event managers and MCees, whether you are an “occasional master of ceremonies” who does “not need the money” or one of those more professional MCees who wants to “earn a living” (p. 108) from the trade they ply regularly. If How To Mc Any Event succeeds in presenting MCeeing as a tangible and elaborate social art form, it is largely because it is very clearly the work and ruminations of a well-versed practitioner, one with a very suave, sophisticated and proudly professional approach to duty. Dey’s narrative powerfully re-enacts some of the most distinctive features of MCeeing while presenting an elaborate ethical position: “I am sorry to disappoint you but as the Master of Ceremonies, you are not the main attraction of the event” (p. 203). The book is in this sense also very much about the requisite self-awareness, discipline and focus that is required for ensuring a successful career for the MCee.
We are informed regarding the necessity of being self-aware and critical, for instance, of the need to: “check with your client or the event organizer to see what the culture is. Do not try to force an opening prayer into the programme. If the lack of it offends your sensibilities, remember you are a professional with a job to do, not a religious referee” p. 14. What makes Dey’s book such a pleasurable read, moreover, is the fact that it also provides above all a basic, practical, hands – on approach to MCeeing, full as it is of instructions on the dos and donts of the profession. Both the already established MC and the up-coming one discover a myriad of interesting ways of engaging their audience. Even silence on the part of an otherwise apparently voluble MC can be golden and become an appropriate strategy of self-introduction in a moment of potential audience distraction and lack of focus. If as suggested Dey’s How to Mc Any Event reads oftentimes like an instruction manual, it is with the palpable difference that the several mini-vignettes interwoven into his presentation are interspersed with some acute moments of humour. Dey is so adept at intimating alternative ways of projecting one’s personality and profession as an MC without wrecking the programme with one’s self-centredness that he succeeds in keeping the reader riveted.
His presentation is dynamic and unpredictable and it seems oftentimes as if one is reading an intriguing story with unexpected twists and turns of plot. Particularly striking is that Dey seeks above all to anticipate and pre-empt many of the problems that wanna-be MCees may encounter. In relying heavily on a string of experiences both personal and from others, he deploys a practical honest approach to his task. Witness for example the following moments of self-confession: “What was the result? I ended up mixing up the order of the speakers, affecting the flow of the event. Do not let this happen to you”; and: “You feel like doing only one thing. Running away fast” (p. 84). The scenarios that lead to these statements are best left for readers of this enlightening book to discover for themselves.
It is also in the context of re-enacting the determination of an MC who is resolved to succeed at all costs that How to MC Any Event presents its readers with a treatise on general event-management that goes beyond simply MCeeing to demonstrate how an MC at any event is ultimately somewhat responsible for the smooth running of the entire programme. Diplomacy is presented as another aspect of ensuring co-operative and fulfilling team work in this respect. Consequently continuously throughout the presentation, Dey emphasizes the ways and means by which an MC can respect and satisfy both the client and the participating audience. Further, he expounds on and demarcates responsibility where event management is concerned: “You have overall responsibility for all aspects of an event” p. 71.Or even more succinctly as Dey eloquently elaborates:
You are really the conductor of an orchestra. You are in charge of several players namely the DJ, entertainers, caterer, parking attendants and security. For the orchestra to make sweet music, all players must take care of their individual roles. They must know when to make their entrance and exit and all this happens under the guidance of you the conductor. (p. 75)
Such statements put the work in perspective where we view MCing from the standpoint not simply of the self-projection of the MC but importantly also of the necessary attention-focusing shift onto the celebrants or clients who have contracted the MC in the first place.
One cannot begin to sum up this brief review without reference to the language of How to MC Any Event. It is clear, concise, straight to the point and intelligible even as it makes most important revelations that witness to the fact that each single MCeed event has its own social dynamics and is managed differently. The wide variety of events that comprise the several individual chapters of the book are full of short but comprehensive notes and guidelines.
One leaves this book with the overall impression that one has gained and benefitted from a combination of informative how-to-do-it knowledge as well as insights into good business practice. What is clear from reading this highly instructive book is that this is the work of an accomplished Master of Ceremonies, who is eager to share his personal experience and ensure high standards within the profession that he is dedicated to. It is in this sense then also a selfless act of professional devotion, full, to reiterate, of very fruitful wisdom for both the aspiring and already-at-work and established MCees. Kudos to the author.

A very, very helpful book and an interesting read too

This book helped me be more confident when addressing groups (which I'm required to do quite often). I like that it shows you the kind of preparation you need to do to drastically minimize the nerves, and how to step up your confidence when it comes to MCing/ crowd speaking. Plus, it's a simple and straight-forward read so you get exactly what Kafui is putting across. I had fun reading How To MC Any Event; I couldn't put it down once I'd started reading. I've already recommended it to some friends, and I wouldn't hesitate to do so again. If you need to get rid of nerves when speaking to a group of people, you need to MC an event, or you're just curious about what it takes to be an MC, I believe this is the book for you.
