How to Write an A+ Essay: A Step-by-Step Guide to Acing Your Next Assignment, by Jenny Sawyer

THE STEP-BY-STEP GUIDE TO HACKING YOUR NEXT ESSAY ASSIGNMENT.

I'm going to make a confession. I was a straight-A student in high school. I graduated summa cum laude from college. My senior thesis won the institution’s coveted essay-writing prize. Not thanks to raw brilliance, or dazzling talent.

No, I knew how to write essays. You see, great essays aren’t necessarily written by the “best and brightest.” They're written by students who know the rules—from concept to thesis statement, from outline to final draft. Students who know how to get the best possible grade for the least amount of work.

I’ll show you how you can, too.

IT'S EASIER THAN YOU MIGHT THINK.

My name is Jenny Sawyer. Over the past five years, I’ve been the girl behind 60second Recap®. I've invested thousands of hours helping teens understand classic literature. I’ve answered countless emails seeking help with essay assignments. I’ve guided individual students, one-on-one, through the process of crafting thesis statements and writing essays, testing and refining the techniques I used when I was in school. Strategies I employed to nail essay after essay.

Most people think A+ essays require hours of hard work. Or genius. I’d always had a hunch they’d thought wrong. Now, I'm certain of it:

YOU DON’T HAVE TO BE A GENIUS TO WRITE AN A+ ESSAY

I’ve read mediocre essays from brilliant students. Great essays from ordinary students. What sets those A+ essay-writing students apart?

They know how to analyze the assignment to keep themselves on track.

I’ll show you how you can, too.

YOU DON’T NEED LONG HOURS TO WRITE AN A+ ESSAY

The best essays rarely take the most time. In fact, some nearly write themselves.

How?

With the right kind of preparation: A+ essay-writing students organize their research and cut their workload by as much as half.

I’ll show you how you can, too.

FORMULAS ARE NEVER THE ANSWER, BUT...

A+ essays are never formulaic. But they have a lot in common.

  • A+ essays start strong with crisp, provocative thesis statements.

  • A+ essays support those thesis statements with well-chosen examples and tightly-reasoned arguments—the hallmarks of persuasive writing.

  • A+ essays finish strong, with conclusions that lock the reader into agreement with the essay’s thesis.

  • A+ essays are written by students working from a simple framework: the five-paragraph essay format.

I’ll show you how you can, too.

DON’T BE INTIMIDATED: IT’S A HEAD GAME, YOU KNOW

Ready to supercharge your essay-writing process? You can when you “think like a prosecutor.” I'll show you how. I’ll also reveal the courtroom “trick” you can use to save yourself time and trouble while you craft a great thesis statement. You'll see how you can use the strategies of a criminal trial to speed you through each step of the essay-writing process, from the organization of your research, to the writing of your thesis statement, to the polish of your final draft.

It’s the first time I’ve ever set this strategy to paper. Now it’s all here for you, just a click away.

Review
"As a writing coach, Jenny Sawyer represents a triple threat: She writes persuasively. She writes with meaning. And she writes in an accessible, clear voice that teaches her readers to do the same.    "In How to Write an A+ Essay, she doesn't just give her readers the tools necessary to ace a paper assignment. She also gives them the tools and walks them through the writing process step by step, from compiling evidence to presenting key ideas and checklists, from giving tips on transition sentences to refining thesis statements. She's with her students every step of the way, offering humor, clarity, and good cheer that will get even the most reluctant student excited about essay writing.    "Get the book. It's an A+."
-Hinda Mandell, Ph.D., Assistant Professor, School of Communication, R.I.T.
"Jenny Sawyer has written the perfect essay-writing book for the person who doesn't like formulaic "how-to" writing books. It is plainly written, so concise, humorous, and easy to understand without being the least bit condescending. It is, in fact, creative and entertaining.    "She utilizes the most apt, interesting metaphor to make the elusive essay form clear and understandable that you have to wonder why her non-method-method hasn't been taught in school before. It will be now.    "This book is a must-read for students from middle school through college, for their parents who want to help, and for their teachers."
-Nora Raleigh Baskin, award-winning author of eleven books for teens

Original, Incisive, Insightful: I give it an A+
By kao
Anyone familiar with Jenny Sawyer's work for 60secondrecap.com knows her trademark style: Original, incisive, insightful. Sometimes fun. Never dumb.

Now she's redirected her talents from short-form video to words-on-the-page. No surprise: Clearly, the girl can write. But I wondered what she could say that hasn't already been said about essay-writing. There's a landfill of essay-writing guides out there, after all. Did she really have anything new to add?

Answer: YES.

In "How to Write an A+ Essay," Sawyer bridges the chasm between partisans in the ongoing five-paragraph essay format culture war. Her prescription--use the basic five-paragraph essay structure the way a sculptor uses an armature for a portrait bust--is exactly right, and it's presented with clarity and style.

More striking: She presents an entirely original framework for planning, researching, outlining, and writing the essay, using the metaphor of a criminal trial. I won't try to summarize it here--read the introduction in the free preview and you'll see where she's going--but her injunction to "Think like a prosecutor" when creating your thesis and writing your essay is inspired.

Sawyer could have just as easily called this guide, "How to Write an Essay with OOMPH." Really, that's what she does: She shows you how to write an essay that's not just correct, but persuasive and memorable. I give her an A+.

This Resource is Aimed at the Group of Students You Are Thinking About Right Now. . .
By Paul W. Hankins
This is my eleventh year of teaching the eleventh grade. Each year--like you--I have that group of students who come in who have not been reading quite as much as the students who we might consider the "honors" group. And they have been writing far less than their peers as well. For these students, to read a book was a choice. To write an essay that would say something about that book was a dare.

And we want our students to read and to write, don't we? Even as a nod to the standards that need to be covered, we should be doing this in our ELA classrooms. But we don't teach standards; we teach students. And Sawyer's book aims to address these students--the ones you and I can see in our heads right now--and how to guide them through a thoughtful response to a piece of literature they might read in our classes.

I had thought that I would be reading a resource for students, but what I really encountered in Sawyer's book was an idea for me: If we want our students to draft thoughtful responses to the literature we share in our classes, then we need to be thoughtful in our inquiry for conversation out of that book. Sawyer's examples using Shakespeare's HAMLET and Steinbeck's OF MICE AND MEN demonstrate how a thoughtful invitation to write plays into the approach that Sawyer delivers in HOW TO WRITE AN A+ ESSAY.

Sawyer's extended metaphor of the prosecutor presenting a case will be familiar to those students who watch television crime dramas or feature-length films dealing with the same subject. As I was reading HOW TO WRITE AN A+ ESSAY, I was picturing Tom Cruise in a FEW GOOD MEN hammering away at Nicholson at the end.

With separate chapters that address the elements of a response, Sawyer "recaps" ideas from the previous section, delivers sound approaches to the next, and provide a working "checklist" at the end. These "checklists" at the end of each section could be used by classroom teachers to invite students to self-assess as they draft. They could also be used by way of informal assessment with the classroom teacher asking him or herself, "Where is this student right now in the process of drafting this response? If they are off-task, when and where did they leave the task?

I have students in mind of this book right now. Sawyer's approach to this subject mirrors the fine work she has done at her site, 60 Second Recap for its brevity and its straight-to-the-point approach to drafting a response to literature. The shorter chapters would work well as the beginning to a writing workshop for that particular section.

The point to consider is that many of us who write do this quite naturally. Think about those students for whom the ability to organize his or her thinking, coupled with rich reading and writing experiences, leads to high-scoring responses when they are assigned. This is not always so for the reader who struggles and then struggles again to present a case for a piece of reading that left him or her with important holes that still need to be filled.

I'll be working as quickly as I can to procure a class-set of HOW TO WRITE AN A+ ESSAY for those students I am picturing in my mind right now. Not only as a guide for them, but as a guide to my approach as the lead learner with them in the room.

Not a student? This is a book for you too!
By A. D.
The cover makes you think that a student writing an essay is the target audience for this book--and you'd be right. You may not fall into that category--I don't either--but this book is for you too!

Think about it, any good piece of writing--even that blog you like to put on your website--needs structure. You need to know how to start out with just the perfect main idea. And you need to know how to follow that idea through whatever it is you're writing. Even your e-mails will improve after reading this book!

I also found the small chapter on punctuation extremely helpful. It's just enough information to jog your memory on where in the world you're supposed to put a comma! If you write anything at all--even one of those annual Christmas newsletters--you can benefit by the ideas in this book.

Even though the how-to subject matter could be viewed as dry, Jenny Sawyer has a way of presenting it that's extremely easy to read. I found it surprisingly hard to put down. I hope she comes out with more e-books on tips for writing. I know I'll be a customer!
