First off, I like the content in this book. It is straight forward and has a good pace.

My major gripe is that to check your answers or access any of the "on-line" resources you must be a registered instructor in the wiley database. Without that, you are SOL.

I think for $150 you should have access to the on-line resources...Seriously, one-hundred and fifty dollars and I can't view the answer keys to the quizzes in the book.

IF this is intended for instructors only it should say INSTRUCTOR'S GUIDE on the book and description.

I am extremely pissed off because immediately when I ordered it I noticed that it was meant for instructors only and Amazon would not cancel my order even if I have been using them for so long on regular basis.

5 Stars With a Caveat

For 13-year-old Henry Larsen, the move was supposed to be a fresh start. But with his parents broke and barely talking to each other, his psychologist a dweeb, and the least popular kid at his new school the only one angling to be his friend, things are not looking up. But none of that compares to the ever-present specter of IT - the event so horrible that it causes Henry to overeat, go into robot mode, and fly into furies. How can things ever get better when your world's been turned upside down?

Author Susin Nielsen's unflinchingly realistic book gripped me with dread early on, a feeling that did not dissipate until the final pages. Don't get me wrong - the book is filled with humor and love and laced with hope, but that doesn't make it easier to read. To say I was unprepared for this book would be putting it mildly. That's what I get for judging a book by its cover. On the other hand, if I had known what the book was actually about, I probably would not have read it, which would have been my loss.

This is a powerful, important story full of beautifully (and occasionally, horribly) flawed people, but it's not for everyone. Curse words are scattered throughout the book, but that is inconsequential compared to the story's examination of the worst kind of bullying and its devastating and far-reaching effects. I would, however, whole-heartedly recommend the book to anyone brave and mature enough to read it.

Amazing Book -- Not Perfect, But Definitely Amazing

Wow. Just wow. The Reluctant Journal of Henry K. Larsen was nothing like what I was expecting. The book description was something along the lines of "Susin peoples this novel about the ultimate cost of bullying with a cast of fabulous characters, dark humour, and a lovable, difficult protagonist struggling to come to terms with the horrible crime his brother has committed."

Okay. I can deal with some dark humor. Especially when I look at the cover. Doesn't it look light-hearted? I was expecting something like The Last Summer of the Death Warriors by Franscico Stork. Or John Green's The Fault in Our Stars.

NO WAY. The Reluctant Journal of Henry K. Larsen is NOT as light-hearted as TFOS. In fact, it's a very dark, very intense read that depressed the heck out of me. Yes, it's THAT GOOD. It totally involved me. I felt tremendous empathy for Henry and his family, but some times I just had to put it down and go for a walk with the dogs. Maybe hug my kids.

The Reluctant Journal of Henry K. Larsen is not a perfect book by the way. Everything wraps up a tiny bit too fast, and the secondary characters aren't fully formed. But I found it poignant and authentic and what it had to say far exceeds any faults.

Just ignore the fact that it doesn't sound like a real diary

This is an excellent depiction of a boy and his family family, ripped apart at the seams by violence and tragedy, and how they begin to stitch themselves back together again. The protagonist, 13-year-old Henry, began his diary at the request of his therapist. Although reluctant to write at first (hence the title), Henry came to depend on his journal as a confidant to help him deal with his pain and grief. The characterization of this boy and the people around him -- his parents, other residents in his apartment building, his new school friends -- is spot-on.

The big problem, though, is that this really doesn't sound like a real diary. In my experience just about every diary-novel has this issue. For the story to work, it has to be detailed. You have to actually hear the characters talk, and so on. But most people don't write in their diaries in that kind of detail; diary entries are usually summaries of the day's events instead, since the diarist writes for himself and he already knows what happened.

Try not to let that bother you. This is a very good book. But I think it would have been better in a more typical, episodic format.

First off, Chia is very knowledgeable and informative. As far as learning chi gong (or any internal exercises for that matter) go, it is difficult to learn from a book. Chia breaks things down, offers each step and is very detailed in his explanations. This book, while being very informative, did not go as in-depth as I would have liked. He has other books, Chi Nei Tsang, and Iron Body Chi Kung, for example, that offer ten times more knowledge. These are great books, and he does provide enough information that a beginner will grasp the meaning, but it felt like these books were done without the same care and effort as his others. This is not a tell-all book, it only covers the specifics and a bit more. Would get it again, just wish I'd known the scope of information would be less than his previous books. Then again, it is cheaper than most his others, so it makes sense. I would recommend it, although suggest you have a good start and understanding beforehand.

Wonderful how-to book on consciousness sharing

Think this book is best for people who are already interested in Taoism and/or energy psychology, and willing to put in the effort of doing some exercises. Illustrations are wonderful. I have never been disappointed in a book by Mantak Chia, especially for the practical, hands-on aspects of Taoism.

Interesting!

This book was sent to me to read and review. My comments on this book are my own. This is an interesting book on a man that moves to the new world to begin a new life. As a young man, Thomas Barnard traded five years of indentured service to receive free land in a new world. It seemed like a good thing but it cost him everything he had ever known.

The book tells of the difficulties experienced by these men that traveled for months to start over. Thomas earns his land and starts a family. Life was tragic in those days and Claudia describes the joys, loves, and horrors of life as she covers Thomas family through nine generations and five wars. This book is well written and well researched. I have never read any of CA's books before but it's obviously a book born of love and passion. I know this is a book that history lovers will find hard to put down. You may purchase this book at the address below.

A Farming Family in the New World: The Barnard Family Saga in America 1679-2005 by CA Coffey is an interesting family biography. It is a family genealogy that has been researched very well. This book is geared more for this family and I think would mean much more to them than to the general reader. But if you are researching your family history this book might be able to assist you in how to search for information. Included are family pictures, a bibliography, recipes and memoriam. It is well written.
Some of the information that is included is from Ancestry.com. I recommend this book for anyone working on their family history and would like some help in how to proceed. C.A. Coffey did an excellent job with this.

A FAMILY GLIMPSE

Not to be mistaken for a bio, or a historical novel, this is a work where the writer gives us a well-researched look into her own ancestry.
It's a piece of herself, starting with Thomas Barnard who immigrated to the U.S. in the late 1600's, and the trials and tribulations as well as the successes, of following generations. Maryland, KY, IL....these are a few of the places the family has called 'home', you'll read of daily survival and life during times of peace as well as war, beginning with the foundation of this country. There are bl/white sketches throughout the book , nice but unnecessary because in your minds eye you create a visual as you read anyway. The author DOES bring to real life the latter generations with the inclusion of photos.

About the Author
Kylie Peppler is an assistant professor of Learning Sciences Program at Indiana University. An artist by training, she engages in research that focuses on the intersection of arts, media, new technologies, and informal learning. Peppler’s dissertation work on the study of the media-rich programming environment Scratch resulted in the book, The Computer Clubhouse: Constructionism and Creativity in Youth Communities. Peppler has since collaborated with Leah Buechley, Yasmin Kafai, and Mike Eisenberg to study etextiles, which resulted in the forthcoming co-edited volume titled, Textile Messages: Dispatches from the World of E-Textiles and Education. Her current work on creativity, computation, and media arts in youth communities is supported by the National Science Foundation and the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation.

Marie Cartier is a scholar, visual /performance artist, queer activist, poet and theologian who has been active in many movements for social change. She teaches in Film and Media at UC Irvine and Gender and Women’s Studies at California State University Northridge.

An Inspirational and Significant Contribution to the Fields of LGBTQ History and Religious Studies

In Marie Cartier’s opus, Baby You Are My Religion: Women, Gay Bars, and Theology Before Stonewall , Cartier provides an accessible and thought provoking analysis of mid-20th Century American butch-femme bar culture, how it should be interpreted as a sacred space for its community, and the various movements it spawned as a result. Set in a time when homosexuality was still deemed as a mental illness and likened to perversion and molestation, bars were the only place where gay and lesbian individuals could not only find community but also discover and shape their individual and sexual identities that the outside world defined as sinful. Much more than a space where gay and lesbian individuals could gather, bars, specifically before the Stonewall Inn Riots of 1969, were a site of corporeal theology, thriving sexuality, and communities that ultimately birthed the gay and lesbian civil rights movement that we know today. Cartier’s thesis points to the fact that although varying religious and LGBTQ communities are often depicted as at odds with each other, in the space of the bar, the sacred meet the profane and more importantly, where sinners ultimately became saviors.
Marie Cartier’s book will not only stand the test of time but also, as I predict, start showing up on the bibliographies of upcoming and future students interested in sexuality, gender, religion, and theology. Cartier’s book offers new wisdom and rejuvenation to those activist religious scholars searching for a religious history of LGBTQ inclusion to only find that one does not exist. Marie Cartier’s epigraph, from her one woman show Ballistic Femme, signifies the various ways in which gay and lesbian individuals find religion; while some find it in church and others in a bar, it is often found within the object one falls in love with, regardless of their sex: “I’ve had butch women say to me, ‘Baby, you are my church. You are my…religion.’” Cartier shows that the sacred space we are often looking for is not only where we are located but also who we are there with that allows us to experience the divine. While the proverbial “last call” in Cartier’s final chapter rings true, her book, Baby, You Are My Religion, inspires her readers to have another symbolic drink of the knowledge she has presented and come back often to revisit the stories of the unknown women who help to shape out modern day LGBTQ movement.

A groundbreaking history/study of LGBT people, the bars and religion.

If a researcher does 25 interviews with all different people, it is generally considered an extensive study. This author interviewed over 100 LGBT people (most were lesbians) and the results are here. I know the author, I was interviewed by her for the book and I was very impressed by the extensive research and history recorded here.
I had never before heard bars compared to a church or religion. I admit to being quite skeptical of her theories when I first heard them but when she quite skillfully compared the Lesbian Bars of the 50's to the local pubs of Ireland saying each were a sacred space for its community (often the "only place" where things happened) I was convinced. I really appreciated her discussions about the unique difficulty for LGBT people being labeled "sinners" first and formost. There are many books on Gays and religion but I have never read anything like this before.

This book is fantastic. I grew up as a twenty something lesbian ...

This book is fantastic. I grew up as a twenty something lesbian in the 80's and it is so descriptive of alot of my experience. I have a better understanding of the generation before me and SO appreciate the insight into their lives, struggles and how they paved the way for myself and this newer generation. I wish the twenty somethings would read this book and gain more understanding of why it is important to keep the words like "lesbian" "vagina" and "feminism" as a source of power. Highly recommended!
