Thorough review for NBEO II

Overall, I found this review guide very helpful in preparing for the NBEO. As the product description says, the book is divided into sections following the same format and weighting as the actual exam: There are many more ocular disease/trauma questions than public health questions, for example.
With each answer, there is a rationale explaining why that choice is correct, or why the others are wrong... this is awesome!

One of the things I noticed was that the questions, especially in the systemic section, focused a lot on the nitty-gritty details. This made it really challenging and at times, discouraging (which is why I gave 4 stars, not 5). However, after taking the test I felt (as did many of my classmates) that the questions on the actual exam tended to be slightly easier than the ones in the book, but that similar topics were covered.

So -- even if you never actually sit down and do all the questions, this book will give you a good idea of what conditions/diseases, etc. to review.

Good NBEO Studying Tool

This review really helped prepare me for boards as a self-evaluation tool to determine which areas I needed to concentrate my studying. Most of the chapters were very concise and representative of the questions that appeared on the national boards.

A few chapters did not give a good representation of the questions that actually appeared on the exam, but overall the questions were very similar to the types of questions were actually asked on the exam.

Overall I would recommend the book to anyone who is preparing for boards and needs a little direction on which areas to emphasize their studying.

I have been out of the field for over 8 years. I've decided to get back into it. Studying at my age was difficult. I found this book on line and decided to give it a try. Loving this book. It makes studying so much easier to learn the materials. What helps too is that this book was compiled by a lot of my instructors when I was in school.

About the Author

Charles W. Schwartz, who died in 1991, was with the Missouri Department of Conservation for forty years, serving as biologist, author, wildlife photographer, and wildlife artist. His illustrations for Aldo Leopold's A Sand County Almanac are particularly well known. Elizabeth R. Schwartz, who since retirement lives in Coeur d'Alene, Idaho, was employed with the Department of Conservation for over thirty years as biologist, author, and assistant in wildlife photography. Together this husband-and-wife team has written or illustrated thirteen other books and many technical papers for scientific journals and popular articles for magazines. They have also produced some twenty-four motion pictures and numerous TV programs, which have received both national and international awards. The Schwartzes also have received recognition by the North American Wildlife Society for four of their technical publications and motion pictures.

Essential Reading on Midwestern Mammals

This book has been a valued, detailed reference on Midwestern mammals since its first edition in 1959. Many, many people own the revised edition, which came out in 1981, but this second revision, published in 2001, is well worth purchasing, for it provides important updates on population levels, management strategies, and economic importance, as well as revised taxonomies (skunks, for instance, are now in their own family and no longer grouped with the weasels). Additionally, this revision includes species that are now found in the state (most notably the armadillo--absent in the state when the 1981 version of this book was prepared, but now quite common in the state and thus included in this edition).

The previous edition was the "bible" of Midwestern mammals; and this is its update.

Of course, the best reason to purchase this book is the wealth of information the Schwartzes provide, in organized, incredibly detailed text. This is no cursory examination of the species, pared down to fit the constraints of an ADD culture; in complete sentences, it includes descriptions of the animals' gaits, daily and seasonal routines, modes of foraging and feeding, preferred foods during various seasons, details of reproduction and development . . . and much, much more. It also includes North American range maps for each species.

Visually, the book is an absolute treasure, because of Charles Schwartz's illustrations. Each species includes a formal portrait including detailed drawings of front and rear feet and various views of the skull (important for serious mammalogists). But that is just the tip of the iceberg.

Indeed, if you search the Internet on these various species, you routinely find illustrations (such as track patterns and the many brilliant, detailed vignettes) that have been lifted, outright, from this publication, with or without appropriate citation.

Let me stress again: the illustrations provide serious information, but throughout, you can sense Schwartz's deep affection and respect for the mammals he depicts.

I should also point out that although this book is about Missouri's mammals, other states in the region clearly benefit from the Schwartzes' masterpiece, too.

Yes, it's expensive, and unfortunately only available in paperback, but it's a book you ought to have on your shelf--it's basically an encyclopedia of Midwestern mammals containing all the information you could possibly want to know. You'll find yourself consulting it often.

The Best State Mammal Book - EVER

I first encountered this book in a natural history biology class. The species accounts are wonderful and up-to-date and you will be blown away by the drawing of each mammal, skull, foot prints etc. by Charles Schwartz. If I could buy prints of my favorite species I would frame and hang them in my house and office - they ARE that good. Charles and his wife Dr. Elizabeth Schwartz wrote the first edition in 1959, I think, and I recall staying up until the wee hours of the morning during college days reading the species accounts. I bought my first copy in 1972 and one has been on my research book shelf every since - some 41 years - and I still routinely consult this book for information. I actually credit this book with helping me decide on a career in wildlife management from which I just retired. This book, even though for Missouri, contains accounts of species found in many states and should be in every public library and in the library of resource managers, students and people interested in the mammals around them.

Excellent reference book

As a college mammology student - this book is a great aid to my understanding the identification and natural history of many mammals found in the Midwest. The translations of scientific names helped me understand and learn names quickly. The line drawings of tracks, teeth and skulls are well done and better than photographs in field guides. This is great resource!!

Roger Bennett is a professor of marketing and the director of the Centre for Research in Marketing at London Metropolitan Business School, UK.

Finola Kerrigan is a lecturer in marketing at King’s College London, UK. She has published her work on arts marketing in a number of journals and scholarly books. She is chair of the Academy of Marketing’s Arts, Heritage, Nonprofit and Social Marketing Special Interest Group.

Daragh O’Reilly is a lecturer in marketing at the University of Sheffield’s Management School, in the UK. His work has appeared in a wide range of academic journals including the Journal of Marketing Management and Marketing Theory.
