Affiliation: University of California, San Diego and Northeastern University Bio: Dr. John Proakis is an Adjunct Professor at the University of California at San Diego and a Professor Emeritus at Northeastern University. He was a faculty member at Northeastern University from 1969 through 1998 and held several academic positions including Professor of Electrical Engineering, Associate Dean of the College of Engineering and Director of the Graduate School of Engineering, and Chairman of the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering. His professional experience and interests focus in areas of digital communications and digital signal processing. He is co-author of several successful books, including DIGITAL COMMUNICATIONS, 5E (2008), INTRODUCTION TO DIGITAL SIGNAL PROCESSING, 4E (2007); DIGITAL SIGNAL PROCESSING LABORATORY (1991); ADVANCED DIGITAL SIGNAL PROCESSING (1992); DIGITAL PROCESSING OF SPEECH SIGNALS (2000); COMMUNICATION SYSTEMS ENGINEERING, 2E (2002); DIGITAL SIGNAL PROCESSING USING MATLAB V.4, 3E (2010); CONTEMPORARY COMMUNICATION SYSTEMS USING MATLAB, 2E (2004); ALGORITHMS FOR STATISTICAL SIGNAL PROCESSING (2002); FUNDAMENTALS OF COMMUNICATION SYSTEMS (2005).

Masoud Salehi received BS from Tehran University and MS and PhD from Stanford University, all in Electrical Engineering. Before joining Northeastern University, he was with the Electrical Engineering Departments at Isfahan University of Technology and Tehran University both in Iran. During 1988-1989 he was a visiting professor at the Information and Communication Theory Research Group, Eindhoven University of Technology, The Netherlands, where he did research in network information theory and coding for storage media. In 1989 he joined the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, Northeastern University. Dr. Salehi is the coauthor of the textbooks "Communication Systems Engineering," "Communication Systems with MATLAB," "Fundamentals of Communication Systems," and "Digital Communications." His main areas of research interest include information theory and coding.

Sparse, laden with typos/errors

Frankly, this book is really poor. The material presented is sparse and sometimes ambiguous, and if your professor teaches straight from the book without providing any examples/information of his or her own, you will likely struggle.

Perhaps more importantly, there are *many* typos in the problems at the end of each chapter (which the professor has to continually correct - this isn't just my own interpretation). Scale is frequently wrong (Hz vs. kHz vs. Mhz, etc.), leading to nonsensical or unobtainable solutions, variables get mislabeled, and more. These errors make the book even more difficult to learn from, as the lack of confidence in the practice problems really compounds the students' sense of uncertainty.

I am kind of shocked that the book was published in this state. It's a first edition, so a certain lack of polish is to be expected, but c'mon guys, I shouldn't feel like I'm fighting an uphill battle to learn the material.

By way of fairness, I will say that the book is very well organized and structured, and I think the block diagrams in particular, depicting a signal's path through the described system, are very informative.

Regarding my credibility, I am in the very top of my class at a fairly new but well-respected School for Engineering, studying EE.

Skips through important concepts too quickly

I am using this book in 2 courses - Signals & Random Processes, and Digital Transmission. Although the material is very in-depth, unless you already know the material and just need a refresher, you will probably find out that it's very hard to follow what the authors say. If I was relying on this book alone, I wouldn't have understood a thing.

They jump from one major topic to another on the same page without explaining the concepts in depth. There are very few examples to help you understand the concepts.

If you have the choice, I would recommend against this book and would recommend John Wiley's Introduction to Analog & Digital Communications, or a book with the same title by Michael Fitz.

Pretty great book if you take the time to read it

This is a math book. Don't expect a lot of pictures and real world examples. It covers the theory of communication systems in very comprehensive detail. If you don't let these details intimidate you, I can guarantee that you will learn a great deal.

"The law is: The King Must Die."

Mary Renault's great historical novel of Theseus begins when he is a young man in Troizen, a well-bred youth who has never known his father's identity. When, with the help of the gods, he succeeds in lifting a stone to reclaim his father's sword, Theseus discovers that he is the son of Aigeus, King of Athens. On his way to Athens to meet him, Theseus arrives in Eleusis, where after wrestling the king in a fight to the death, he finds himself, unexpectedly, the King of Eleusis. Later, in Athens, when fourteen young men and women are chosen by lot to become bull-dancers in Crete, fulfilling a tribute demanded by the King of Crete, Theseus listens to his god and joins the group, never knowing if he will survive to return to his father.

Renault tells the story of Theseus as if Theseus were a real person, not a mythical character, using history, archaeology, and a deep understanding of the cultures of the period to place Theseus in a realistic context. Her descriptions of the lifting of the stone, the wrestling match in Eleusis, Theseus's arrival at the palace in Athens, and especially his experiences in becoming a bull dancer bring the period vibrantly to life in ways consistent with the historical record. Theseus's devotion to the god Poseidon, to whom he prays throughout his journey, reflects his appreciation of his own smallness in relation to the gods, and his honoring of the gods unique to the kingdoms he visits show how the Greek religion gradually incorporated increasing numbers of gods and goddesses to explain the increasingly complex mysteries of life faced by Greek citizens.

Renault never fails to treat Theseus, his religion and culture, and the traditions of the countries in which he travels with the dignity they would have inspired in their own period. She never patronizes either her characters or her readers, writing with elegance and a fine appreciation for the details of daily life, the art of the period, and the pantheon of gods thought to control men's destinies. Whether Theseus was a real man whose strength and reputation grew to mythical proportions, as Renault illustrates, or whether he was, in fact, a mythical character whom she places in a realistic context in ancient Greece is less important than the fact that she creates a plausible life for this monumental character. Few, if any, other authors are so successful in recreating an entire era, its people, its beliefs, and its culture. Mary Whipple

The Theseus legend brought to life

Those readers who were upset at Mary Renault "tampering" with the accepted myth of Theseus should realize that her interest is not mythology but history. As a historical novelist, Renault has no peer. She researched her subjects thoroughly and evoked the time and place so accurately that her books seem to spring into life. She was less interested in Theseus as a mythological figure than as a historical figure, and her rendering of Theseus as a lightweight, fast on his feet, quick and active, seems absolutely correct. Renault is probably correct in believing that the myth of the minotaur in the labyrinth derived from the actual bull dancers of ancient Crete, who were for the most part captive slaves from the subject territories ruled by Crete three thousand years ago, and her depiction of the bull court, and the team Theseus trained to dance with the bulls, realizing that they would either all survive together or they would all die together, is more compelling than any labyrinth story we are already familiar with. In "The King Must Die", Theseus becomes a very human figure we can relate to and empathize with, rather than a stiff mythological figure more god than man. This is Renault's genius -- she brings ancient civilizations so vividly to life that we feel we are right there in the middle of the action. "The King Must Die" is one of her best.

One of my all time favorite books!

I first read this book about 30 years ago and I have reread it several times since then. I generally don't reread books, so for me to do so as many times as I have with this one says a lot for the book. Before I read this, I was mildly familiar with the Theseus legend. After reading this book, I became extremely interested in the legend, particularly in the true-life palace at Knossos. The book gives some excellent background in the religions of the old matriarchal societies in which, each year, the king was sacrificed to the earth mother to ensure good crops for the next year. The theories on the bull dance which are based upon the findings at the palace of Knossos are excellently done. And the connection with Theseus belief that he is descended from the god Poseidon and so many things coinciding either with earthquake or something to do with the ocean prove that Mary Renault never left out any parts of her story when considering events that would take place. The research done for this book is great, and if you're like me it will lead you to do further research on your own. I recommend that you purchase this book and also its sequel The Bull from the Sea. You won't be going wrong!

Paul Rand (1914-1996) was a pioneering figure in American graphic design whose career spanned almost seven decades. About the Author
Steven Heller is the art director of the NY Times Book Review and co-chair of the MFA Design program at the School of Visual Arts. He is the editor of the AIGA online journal, VOICE. He is a contributing editor to PRINT, EYE, Baseline, and ID. He writes frequently for Metropolis and other design magazines. He is author, co-author, and editor of over 90 books on design and popular culture.

George Lois, a native New Yorker, joined Doyle Dane Bernbach as an art director in 1958 and started his first agency in 1960. He is the recipient of an AIGA Gold Medal, among other honours, and the author of two books on advertising. He continues to consult for major corporations.

Jessica Helfand is a partner at Winterhouse, a design collaborative in New England, and a founding editor of "Design Observer," She teaches in the graduate program in graphic design at Yale University and has written several books on design and cultural criticism. She lives in Falls Village, CT.

The Late Great Paul Rand

If you know anything about design, the words Paul Rand retain some meaning for you. It may be vague, perhaps one of your professors recommended you look him up, maybe one of your design icons listed him as an influence.

Or quite likely you have seen some of his work, and never knew the man behind such world famous, global dominating logos. This has to be the most in depth Paul Rand book I have read, and I have borrowed many from various libraries. Which inclines me to say that if the history of design has ever intrigued you or you just like Mr.Rands work, then this is probably the best choice for you. Not only does it have a ton of images but it's probably the best bang for you buck as far as Rand books go.

Buy a Magnifying Glass

This is a pretty thorough book on a graphic design icon. Unfortunately, the book is typeset very poorly in an 8pt serif font. Reading more than a few pages at a time strains your eyes and results in a headache - ironic considering Rand was a firm believer in usable design.

Lots of full color samples of Rand's work to coincide with the text, which is nice.

Overall, this book is a great resource. It's too bad the type is so difficult to read.

Amazing

Michelle Hazen knocked this out of the park and I'm only a third of the way through this amazing rewrite of season four. First, very few Vampire Diaries' writers get the characters the way she clearly has in this novel. I'm pretty much in awe at how well she knows them and writes them perfectly. This reads like a perfect episode of Vampire Diaries and I don't say that lightly. I'm a huge TVD snob, huge.

Second, Desperate Love is written with a perfect blend of humor, action, romance and friendship. I found myself laughing out loud and melting at the romance, sometimes all at once.

Third, Hazen writes with what appears to be a wealth of experience at her fingertips. I know from her author's note she has spent some time traveling the world, but it's one thing to do so and another to write about it. She's a true storyteller, in every sense of the word.

Now, I'm off to read the next installment of this incredible novel.

Amazing Rewrite of S4 is Worth Every Penny!

Trust me, fans of TVD: You want to read this book. I know, I know - by the time you buy all three parts, it's the same price as a regular ol' novel. But three for the price of one! It's a steal because Michelle Hazen rewrites S4 with incredible skill, a real eye for details, and a deep understanding and appreciation of the characters who populate this world.

It's little things: Starting with the cover, note she's wearing plaid flannel sleep-shorts, and not sexy lingerie. Just like Elena. It's a little thing, really. Something someone not paying attention wouldn't notice. But it's perfect. Absolutely perfect. The whole book is like that, filled with tiny details that are so incredibly RIGHT. I find myself nodding a lot and saying, "Yes! That!" to all sorts of things. Like the Hello Kitty diary and Caroline's ability to make a castle out of duct tape and Jeremy reminding Elena that he's the same age now that she was when their parents died.

It's funny and sad and snarky and action-packed and bittersweet and sexy (despite strictly adhering to the PG-13 rating). Hazen has managed to capture absolutely everything I love about the show within these pages. I can close my eyes and see it, all of it happening the way she's written it. I can hear the actors bantering her dead-on dialogue. Her new characters blend perfectly into the supernatural menagerie that is Mystic Falls. Her plot twists and turns along the way feel right and true. Like the best episodes, it's all happening way too fast; I have to remind myself to slow down, to savor, to bask, when really I all want is to gulp this story in big, greedy swallows.

Thank you, Michelle Hazen, for sharing your talents. This is fanfiction at its finest!

What did I do without this?

In a word: Incredible. In many words: OH DEAR LORD WHAT DID I EVER DO BEFORE READING THIS STORY AND I CAN'T GET ENOUGH AND BLESSED BE TO ALL THE GODS THAT PROPELLED THE AUTHOR TO MAKE THIS INTO A TRILOGY BECAUSE I CANNOT STOP READING!

M. Hazen has woven a whole new Season 4 for us, and the only thing that kills me is that I wish with every fiber of my being that I could have seen it play out on my screen with sinfully attractive actors. Everything about her alternate reality is, just as she promises, the way THE FANS would have written it. And it's clear that Hazen did just that.

The characters are so spot-on, so perfect, it makes you wonder at Hazen's real life involvement in the show because there is no way someone from the outside world could grasp voice and motivation as clearly as she does. The characters are complicated, witty, and exactly the embodiment of everything I hope and know them to be.

Her plot is even better. In giving us a new version of Season 4, she eases us into it gently from a few scenes that I, along with many others, constantly rewound and re-watched again and again then BAM! It's a whole new world. She asks different questions of the characters and their response? Shocking. Intriguing. Hair-pulling "WHY, GAWD, WHY?" all while even managing to give us a few new locations that are described with such clarity and detail that I'm reaching for my wallet to buy my plane ticket because it's just so, so good.

An absolutely amazing first part to the trilogy, unable to be put down, and a masterpiece in its own right. Bravo, M. Hazen, you are truly a master of your craft.
