About the Author
Affiliation: University of California, San Diego and Northeastern University Bio: Dr. John Proakis is an Adjunct Professor at the University of California at San Diego and a Professor Emeritus at Northeastern University. He was a faculty member at Northeastern University from 1969 through 1998 and held several academic positions including Professor of Electrical Engineering, Associate Dean of the College of Engineering and Director of the Graduate School of Engineering, and Chairman of the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering. His professional experience and interests focus in areas of digital communications and digital signal processing. He is co-author of several successful books, including DIGITAL COMMUNICATIONS, 5E (2008), INTRODUCTION TO DIGITAL SIGNAL PROCESSING, 4E (2007); DIGITAL SIGNAL PROCESSING LABORATORY (1991); ADVANCED DIGITAL SIGNAL PROCESSING (1992); DIGITAL PROCESSING OF SPEECH SIGNALS (2000); COMMUNICATION SYSTEMS ENGINEERING, 2E (2002); DIGITAL SIGNAL PROCESSING USING MATLAB V.4, 3E (2010); CONTEMPORARY COMMUNICATION SYSTEMS USING MATLAB, 2E (2004); ALGORITHMS FOR STATISTICAL SIGNAL PROCESSING (2002); FUNDAMENTALS OF COMMUNICATION SYSTEMS (2005).
Masoud Salehi received BS from Tehran University and MS and PhD from Stanford University, all in Electrical Engineering. Before joining Northeastern University, he was with the Electrical Engineering Departments at Isfahan University of Technology and Tehran University both in Iran. During 1988-1989 he was a visiting professor at the Information and Communication Theory Research Group, Eindhoven University of Technology, The Netherlands, where he did research in network information theory and coding for storage media. In 1989 he joined the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, Northeastern University. Dr. Salehi is the coauthor of the textbooks "Communication Systems Engineering," "Communication Systems with MATLAB," "Fundamentals of Communication Systems," and "Digital Communications." His main areas of research interest include information theory and coding.

Sparse, laden with typos/errors

Frankly, this book is really poor. The material presented is sparse and sometimes ambiguous, and if your professor teaches straight from the book without providing any examples/information of his or her own, you will likely struggle.
Perhaps more importantly, there are *many* typos in the problems at the end of each chapter (which the professor has to continually correct - this isn't just my own interpretation). Scale is frequently wrong (Hz vs. kHz vs. Mhz, etc.), leading to nonsensical or unobtainable solutions, variables get mislabeled, and more. These errors make the book even more difficult to learn from, as the lack of confidence in the practice problems really compounds the students' sense of uncertainty.
I am kind of shocked that the book was published in this state. It's a first edition, so a certain lack of polish is to be expected, but c'mon guys, I shouldn't feel like I'm fighting an uphill battle to learn the material.
By way of fairness, I will say that the book is very well organized and structured, and I think the block diagrams in particular, depicting a signal's path through the described system, are very informative.
Regarding my credibility, I am in the very top of my class at a fairly new but well-respected School for Engineering, studying EE.

Skips through important concepts too quickly

I am using this book in 2 courses - Signals & Random Processes, and Digital Transmission. Although the material is very in-depth, unless you already know the material and just need a refresher, you will probably find out that it's very hard to follow what the authors say. If I was relying on this book alone, I wouldn't have understood a thing.
They jump from one major topic to another on the same page without explaining the concepts in depth. There are very few examples to help you understand the concepts.
If you have the choice, I would recommend against this book and would recommend John Wiley's Introduction to Analog & Digital Communications, or a book with the same title by Michael Fitz.

Pretty great book if you take the time to read it

This is a math book. Don't expect a lot of pictures and real world examples. It covers the theory of communication systems in very comprehensive detail. If you don't let these details intimidate you, I can guarantee that you will learn a great deal.
