Organization
The book is organized into 3 main parts, comprising of a total of 11 chapters. Part I covers the building blocks of Internet of Things (IoTs) and their characteristics. A taxonomy of IoT systems is proposed comprising of various IoT levels with increasing levels of complexity. Domain specific Internet of Things and their real-world applications are described. A generic design methodology for IoT is proposed. An IoT system management approach using NETCONF-YANG is described. Part II introduces the reader to the programming aspects of Internet of Things with a view towards rapid prototyping of complex IoT applications. We chose Python as the primary programming language for this book, and an introduction to Python is also included within the text to bring readers to a common level of expertise. We describe packages, frameworks and cloud services including the WAMP-AutoBahn, Xively cloud and Amazon Web Services which can be used for developing IoT systems. We chose the Raspberry Pi device for the examples in this book. Reference architectures for different levels of IoT applications are examined in detail. Case studies with complete source code for various IoT domains including home automation, smart environment, smart cities, logistics, retail, smart energy, smart agriculture, industrial control and smart health, are described. Part III introduces the reader to advanced topics on IoT including IoT data analytics and Tools for IoT. Case studies on collecting and analyzing data generated by Internet of Things in the cloud are described.

About the Author
Arshdeep Bahga is a Research Scientist with Georgia Institute of Technology. His research interests include cloud computing and big data analytics. Arshdeep has authored several scientific publications in peer-reviewed journals in the areas of cloud computing and big data.

Vijay Madisetti is a Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Georgia Institute of Technology. Vijay is a Fellow of the IEEE, and received the 2006 Terman Medal from the American Society of Engineering Education and HP Corporation.

An excellent & detailed systems view of IoT

Provides a detailed "systems view" of the IoT field. Lots of real code to guide the student on
real-world IoT applications developed using a novel design methodology. Cloud-based backend
and analysis are described in detail, as are configuration management systems using NETCONF/YANG.
A solid treatment of a subject that has been subject of much hype and less substance.

Essential reference for IOT projects

A great set of tutorials on the how and why of the IOT. Given that so many IOT devices have been prototyped using Arduino, Linux and Pytyon, the examples will be very meaningful to anyone developing sensor networks and applications. A must read if you are contemplating a IOT project on Kickstarter or Indiegogo.

David Steiner is a clinical psychologist by training, and currently a Professor of Psychiatry at the University of Toronto and Professor Emeritus in the Department of Clinical Epidemiology and Biostatistics and in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioural Neurosciences, both at McMaster University. David is a Senior Scientific Editor of Health Reports, and sits on the editorial boards of four other journals. He has written or edited 9 books, in the areas of statistics, epidemiology, public health, and measurement theory; and have published over 350 articles in these and other areas. David's main interests are quality of life in people with various medical conditions, scale development, research design, treatment of the homeless mentally ill, and woodworking.

A must read for people who want to develop a new instrument/scale to assess health behavior

If you want to develop a new instrument/scale to assess health behavior get this book. I have been doing biostatistics for a living for more than a dozen years and this book in its various forms has remained one of my favorites because of it's clear writing and spot on advice. Over the years countless doctors have proposed using an instrument they have created to assess response to a new treatment. This book covers exactly why that is two projects not one. Development/validation of the instrument is its own project. This book covers the statistics and methods used to properly assess the reliability and validity of new (or existing) instrument/test/scale with fantastically clear writing. There are many examples taken from medicine and a fair number coming from education and psychology. All are clearly explained.

There are no proofs or derivations in this book. Instead you will find basic algebra and worked examples for most of the statistics. All the coverage is good but one of the truly excellent features of this book is the coverage of intra-class correlation. Nobody has done a better job explaining ICCs.

Some of my students find Norman and Streiner's Biostatistics the Bare essentials hilarious others find it too wordy. While there are rare funny comments this book has been edited to be much more concise and not silly. So, while it is not mathematically rigorous, it is a serious book. While this is a statistics and methods book at it's core, the writing is accessible for anyone with a background in medicine, education or psychology, as well as people coming from mathematics who like clean prose.

While this book could be better (if it had a web supplement with detailed coverage of SAS and/or R) it is otherwise fantastic.

Memoir set in the 3 Valleys (Twin Tips in the Trois Vallées)

Twin Tips meet Twin Peaks meet Lord of the Flies…

Down and dirty in the world of the chalet host. Belle de Neige has been blogging incognito for several years from Les Trois Vallées, France (apparently the world’s largest ski area) and this is her memoir of time served, mainly at Chalet Christina. If you are a parent with a teenage child – just out of school and just about to spend a Winter ‘gap-yah’ as a Seasonaire – this book is probably best avoided. If, however, you want the inside track of life on the piste, then this is a must-read.

Life on the mountain is indeed a testosterone fuelled cocoon. There are alcohol and drugs aplenty, shags galore and enough snow for all the snow bunnies to romp and revel into the early wee hours. Whether it is lashings of Mutzig (the seasonaire’s favourite beverage according to Yodel Magazine) or drinking Genepi out of a Wellington Boot… or, learning to graduate from a Jager Bomb, to a Jager Mega Drive, to a Jager Hand Grenade, all the while listening to the ubiquitous strains at The Drop Inn Bar of “Living Next Door to Alice” (yes, ok, we all recognise the song with slightly different lyrics....).

As the author observes: “ski resorts function unabashedly on the slave labour of randy British teenagers” and it is certainly true that the Brits abroad know how to party. But it is probably little wonder that people who live on top of one another, and who are the backbone of most ski resorts, lead life to the full – and occasionally over the top, whether it is shredding the slopes or managing to keep their personal lives together. Indeed, “extremity is normalised”. Surrounded by the enormity of landscape, the magnificent vistas, and the harshness and variability of the weather conditions, the mountains, simply put, have an odd effect on people.

Indeed, the life of a chalet host is not wholly the glamorous life one might think – it is more about cleaning toilets and dealing with clients, who often bowl up with the most outlandish habits and requests, that often keep the chalet host tethered to the toilet. In total, Belle reckons she polished the shower surround in the chalet about 300 times over the season. But a word of warning – if you phenomenally upset your chalet host or treat her (sometimes him – enter Belle’s eventual squeeze, Scruffy but Handsome) with disrespect, and she has well proven ways of getting back at you. Did you notice that your toothbrush had moved ever so slightly whilst you were out on the slopes? Be afraid, very afraid! Just give some thought to what it might have been used for (and you can be assured it won’t have been for cleaning teeth). Or Optrex? Meant for eyes but does wonders for the digestion if slipped into the diet – and this will only become apparent on departure (after all, the chalet host is not going to shoot herself in the foot by encouraging loose bowels in the chalet, is she? Just more skid marks to clear up).

Oh, and the hair, the sink gunk, the mess, the detritus, the visceral stains, the demands of punters, the cooking and warding off randy punters (or not) – all in a day’s work for our heroic chalet host. And all this for a free ski pass, and a lifestyle that is as far removed from city life and responsibilities as it can be. She is very clear that she would encourage her own children to experience this kind of life as it is a rite of passage…. so it can’t be all bad! And it isn’t, there is a huge amount of fun to be had.

This is a memoir full of acute observations, ballsy accounts, fun, lewdness, irony and so much more, and if you are heading for the Alps, make sure to pack it.

Read the blog, enjoyed the book

Despite hating the Brits (as a patriotic American, who doesn't) this broad's sarcastic style and complete lack of boundaries was pretty funny. While she clearly was not a good skier prior to the publication, nor was she aware of basic ski mythology, she made fun of herself while learning how be a seasonaire, or as we call them her; high school kids and college drop outs who operate the lifts in American ski resorts. Despite her lack of boundaries, she managed to focus on her relationship and other girly matters that clearly did not fit with the image the cover picture implied. Go figure.

Ok, but not as sexy as it may sound

I'm not quite sure how I ran across this book. It was probably from an ad on another website. I skimmed the author's blog, and from some of the blog posts and photos (not to mention the book cover), I expected it to be a bit more "steamy", with more stories about sexual adventures. While there was a bit of that, it the experiences were written in either a matter-of-fact or a humorous way, and not very titillating.

What I ended up enjoying the most about the book were the stories about the obnoxious chalet guests and unreasonable resort management. These were funny and entertaining. I did not so much care for the tales of binge drinking, drug use, and living in filth. This was just not interesting to me.

Overall, it was an OK book about the author's experiences as a chalet girl. But don't buy it if you're looking for a book with steamy sex scenes, starring promiscuous young hostesses.

Required reading--much more than just about defending your brand

Copulsky has written a must read for marketing management in the age of Twitter, Facebook, and sites like Tripadvisor.com. He clearly and succinctly lays out the need for being prepared to defend your brand, and how to do it. His use of the US Military's counterinsurgency (COIN) strategy may be off-putting to some at first, but he deftly adapts it to the world of brand management. The well-defined and logical approach is accessible to the layman, but has insights for the expert. Every time I, a non-marketing manager, started to say "well, what about..." Copulsky had an answer--usually on the next page.

I have one beef, and one suggestion. I think Copulsky underplays the concept of brand resilience. What he is really talking about is solid brand management in this modern age. His "brand troops" really need to be the entire organization, and his model should be embedded in the organization's DNA. And especially for services organizations, the brand really is the company--and everyone should feel ownership in its success and its defense.

My suggestion is that we are entering a new world of customer expectations of transparency, and I think this could have been more developed in this book. In a world where we can track package locations almost to the mile, consumers will continue to expect ever greater levels of transparency of all the processes within an organization that impact their experience. This transparency requirement will require even more attention be paid to protecting your brand.

Thoughtful and Comprehensive

The reviews by Sam Friedman on July 20, 2011 and Sean Geehan on November 11, 2011 both summarize this book well.

When he discusses a plan on how to learn and adapt one's brand defenses from sabotage, he mentions "it many help to compare systematically tracking and investigating brand sabotage to the way companies systematically improve their manufacturing processes.", drawing a parallel to the Six Sigma process.

He also incorporates the hit TV show Undercover Boss. "The insights that executives develop on Undercover Boss, and from executive frontline engagement programs in general, are not statistically valid or even necessarily representative, but they are a start when it comes to understanding the challenges in building a resilient brand and ensuring that employees clearly understand the brand." On a similar note, he mentions that a companies' employees are its most powerful brand ambassadors.

This book will make you think 3-4 times before making a foolish comment or video about your company to the media, regardless if it's to the TV/Radio stations, Newspaper and particularly the web portals.

VERY WORTHWHILE READ!!

I am a fairly demanding reader and was really impressed by this work. The book is highly readable, and more importantly, an excellent source of insights and actions to be taken. The use of counterinsurgency linkages, relevant stories, insightful section titles, and key takeaways by chapter all make for an enjoyable read while learning about relevant issues and recommended responses. "Brand Resilience" begins and ends with the admonition that "it's what you do next that counts". This book helps management develop and execute proactive gameplans for defending and strengthening their brands.

About the Author
John J. DiIulio, Jr. is a Professor of Political Science at the University of Pennsylvania and has won each of Penn's most prestigious teaching awards. He was previously Professor of Politics and Public Affairs at Princeton University. He received his PhD in Political Science from Harvard University. He has been a senior fellow and directed research programs at several leading think tanks including the Brookings Institution and has won awards from the Association of Public Policy Analysis and Management, the American Political Science Association, and other bodies. He has advised presidential candidates in both parties, served on bipartisan government reform commissions, and worked as a senior staff member in the White House.

Meena Bose is director of the Peter S. Kalikow Center for the Study of the American Presidency, Peter S. Kalikow Chair in Presidential Studies, and Professor of Political Science at Hofstra University. She received her PhD in 1996 from Princeton University. Dr. Bose teaches courses on the American Presidency, Presidential Leadership and Policy Making, and American Politics. She is the author or editor of several volumes in presidency studies and American politics. She taught for six years at the United States Military Academy at West Point.

Talk about a classic!!!

"Heidi" was not only my favorite book as a child but still belongs on the top-five list. At 77 years of age, that's a long time to have a story stick with you like this one has. I have seen numerous movie versions of the story and have loved every one. You are never too old to re-read Heidi. In fact, why haven't I gifted this book to my grandchildren!
