My father began writing this book six years ago, when he was 84. He wanted to document his experiences for future generations of the Dorris family to share. In a world increasingly polarized along national, political, or religious boundaries, his stories give a frank reminder that we should be cautious before making moral judgments about those with whom we disagree. He reminds us one’s moral courage defines character. Neither cruelty nor compassion was limited to just one side of the war. My father never claimed that he was more courageous than the man fighting alongside him. He did not singlehandedly win a battle, nor did he receive any recognition beyond what many received after the war. The extraordinary acts of courage and compassion described in this book were performed by ordinary people, from both sides of the war. They send a powerful message that the potential for such acts is not restricted to just a few “heroes”. We all have that potential and we all must believe in the potential of others. We all must believe we can create bonds to cross enemy lines. The challenges dad faced during WW2 helped define, and test, his character. His stories of courage and of failure in the midst of the chaos have served as moral guideposts and cautionary tales for me throughout my life. My brothers, sisters, and I were undoubtedly shaped by the way he would punctuate his fatherly advice with many of the stories recounted in this book. Even as a child, I could relate to the many life challenges his wartime predicaments would illustrate. As I began writing this introduction it occurred to me that while these stories had an impact on us, we rarely discussed them. This made me wonder how many others have relatives who fought in war have been similarly shaped by their stories. How many other people can find their core values rooted in similar war stories they heard growing up? While my father participated in the Veterans History Project to document his experiences, there are undoubtedly many others who did not have the chance to document their experiences and valuable life lessons. My hope is that the families of those silent soldiers will find their voice in these stories.

A Generous Gift of Remembrance

One thing that struck me in reading this book were the names of the guys involved in the events that happened over 60 years before the memoirs were written. The inclusion of the names speaks to the deep impressions that must have been established by these men and the events they shared. Many of us who have not lived through such experiences often think of them in a remote or dispassionate way, unable to imagine the nitty-gritty of a soldier's day-to-day. This short memoir changed that for me. In his way, Mr Dorris takes you there. It is like a dream in the way scenes and people blend and change but to know that it is real makes one shudder about committing anyone to such an experience without the most noble of causes. And throughout there is a demonstrated faith that minimizing suffering is the goal, even in war. However difficult it might have been be to walk again down the memory path of these experiences, the author should know what a gift he has given to those of us who he allowed to walk with him. This book shows a generosity of spirit in the author and offers a step in the direction of peace.

By far the best memoir of WW2 I have read -- EVER

If your father or grandfather did not write down his memories for you and your children to read you must read this book! There are a couple of chapters that will make your jaw drop and there is one chapter when they were one of the first to discover a death camp that you will never ever be able to forget. For that scene alone history teachers everywhere should require students to read. I love history and I have never been so touched by such a short memoir, EVER. There are many books that are longer and maybe better written but I can assure you none explains more clear what happens to people in war and shows how someone can give a gift that thanks you in a way you can never forget.

An illuminating novel on reincarnation—a nice complement to her first book!

“I Remember You” has a different approach from Akemi’s first book, “Why We Are Born.” It is a fictional story about Alex and Derek exploring reincarnation and their past lives together.

I’m usually not a big fan of spiritual fiction because I sometimes find them kind of cheesy and forced, but I had no doubts about this one—I mean, Akemi and cheesy do not go together. As usual, her no-nonsense, simple, light-hearted style of presentation—with a touch of humor, of course—carries the story. It allows the reader to explore complicated and even uncomfortable ideas safely.

The characters—Alex and Derek—have a very different style and approach to their learning. While their thought processes work very differently, they support and complement each other as their memories re-emerge. They are very much real—I love the way that, by identifying with Alex and/or Derek, we get to go through the process of discovery (awe, confusion, frustration, questions, acceptance, etc.) together with them and recognize them in our own lives. Also, the often difficult-to-grasp concept of claircognizance is described very nicely here.

What I like about Akemi’s work is that it’s empowering. She gives you the ingredients in “Why We Are Born”, and “I Remember You” is like a sample recipe. And now, we get to be creative ourselves, using the ideas and hints that Akemi provided.
I can’t wait for her next novel ! :)

This book reads like something a fourteen year old girl would write

The people who are giving this book five stars have got to be personal friends of the author. This book reads like something a fourteen year old girl would write. What basis in reality is there for some guy to walk up to a woman he thinks he has met, but cannot place where he knows her from, and then say "Can I tell you about my dreams?" and then proceed to go into a detailed account of his dreams? ARE YOU JOKING? How did this even get published?

Very good example of Akashic discovery

Two friends meet and discover shared past life memories. The amount of information they remember would be incredulous in a nonfiction work, but it works in a fictional novel. This story takes place more in the past than in the present. In this age of new energies, the kind of interaction between Alex and Derek will be more and more common! Nice example of how the Akash works.

Un libro excelente para Pastores (o personas considerando el ministerio) diseñado para animar, dirigir, corregir y apoyar a los ministros que estamos constantemente en la batalla. Con un corazón relevante que se identifica hasta lo más profundo de nuestros retos, el autor nos ofrece esperanza y sabiduría de una manera práctica y accesible. Una vez que comencé a leerlo, no me pude detener. Lo leí en menos de tres días y lo subraye, marque y anoté como si fuera un libro de texto en el seminario. Aprendí más realidad de ministerio en este libro que en la teoría del colegio Biblico. Realmente todo pastor tiene que incluir este libro en su biblioteca. Ojalá lo pudieran sacar en ingles.

Useless Map

I bought the map to help with planning our vacation to South Africa. I looked at the routes on the map and got a good idea of where we should stay for the night and booked my hotels accordingly. Besides this map, I did use GoogleMaps to get some estimate of drive time between destinations. We had ordered a GPS unit for South Africa so I wasn't too worried about using this map once over there but our GPS malfunctioned and I was forced to use this map the whole trip. Right off the bat we found out that the Marco Polo map does not bother to indicate what is a paved route and what is not and we found ourselves on some rather bad roads that could have been avoided. Each night I would check with locals about my planned route for the next day and they would just laugh at me and my big fancy map that said nothing. We ended up putting on a lot of extra miles and hours having to change our route to get to pre-booked guest houses thanks to this ill conceived map. Not only does it fail to have a legend for paved/unpaved roads but they don't feel the need to label all the roads either - we were guessing and flying by the seat of our pants most oft he time using this map. Guess this map will make you feel like a real explorer because you will be lost most of the time so I gave it 1 star because it lived up to it's Marco Polo explorer image. Wish I could give negative stars!
