University of Virginia psychology professor Hetherington and writer Kelly offer a "primer" on the "postnuclear family experience." After studying more than 1,400 families and 2,500 children over three decades, Hetherington sees divorce as part of a series of "interconnected transitions" in life rather than a one-time event. While destructive in the short-term, divorce can also be positive, creating new opportunities for long-term personal growth. The authors begin by looking at the character of the marital relationship, which is like a bank account: each partner makes "deposits" of strengthening factors (like mutual support and intimacy) and "withdrawals" that debilitate the relationship. The emotional base of the marriage erodes if there's an imbalance of "deposits" and "withdrawals" for too long, resulting in divorce. Depending on their "protective" factors (maturity, autonomy) vs. "risk" (impulsiveness, antisociability), ex-partners will weather the stormy first year after divorce with varying degrees of resilience. After six years, most are happier. While the general picture is fairly positive, the detail can be unnerving. Children may be adjusting, but after six years, a quarter of them see their noncustodial father once a year or less. One fourth of ex-spouses are still having conflicts after six years. Most stepfathers give up the struggle to connect with resisting stepchildren after two years. With these darker realities in mind, the authors offer a series of practical suggestions at the end of each chapter. But its scholarly bent (aimed at its primary audience of upper-level college students and counseling professionals) and its claim to be "the most comprehensive study of divorce in America" may turn off some.

This was a most helpful, elucidating book. It maps out what life after divorce is like, on the basis of an enormous, scientific study. Anyone who has been divorced, or is the child of divorced parents (or marrying one) will find in it all the touchstones you need to know about to help you guide your emotional life.
After all the political fighting about divorce, here is a book with no agenda, except the truth. Indispensible.

Just the facts ma'am. The first truly helpful book I've ever read on the subject. This book allowed me to look at divorce from a different, more productive perspective. The fact that it is backed up with solid research gave me the confidence to trust that I have the power to control where I go from here... a message that I'm trying very hard to instill in my children too.

CHAPTER 11: Epilepsy: the Archeproof (30 pages) Epilepsy stands at the center of the debate of whether or not a Christian can have an unclean spirit because Jesus cured epilepsy by casting out a spirit. However, some believe that the boy of Matthew 17 was not "epileptic," but "lunatic." Yet all the Greek lexicons agree that the word in question means "epileptic." So if epilepsy can be caused by a spirit, and Christians can have epilepsy, then here is real proof that a Christian can have an unclean spirit. However, there is more than one type of epilepsy; are Christians immune to one type and not to another? Is there a type which may be caused by a spirit and a type which is purely natural? CHAPTER 12: Hysteria: the Archetype (65 pages) Hysteria is also central to the study of demonology because what used to be called "possession" is now called "hysteria." "Hysteria" does not refer to a panic-stricken person, but is something quite different. What is it; what is its medical or psychological nature; are Christians immune to it? Is it really just dissociated mechanisms from the person's subconsciousness, as psychiatrists claim, or is there more to it?

One of the most bizarre forms of hysteria is multiple personality, which includes the case of the Eve of "The Three Faces of Eve." Were any of these patients Christians? More surprises are found here.

CHAPTER 13: The Neuroses and Psychoses (19 pages) We know that Christians can become neurotic or psychotic. Are spirits involved in either of these illnesses? To determine this, the medical and psychological nature of these conditions are explored. This includes: studying the neuroses such as anxiety, phobia, obsession, compulsion, depression; and studying the psychoses such as paranoia, depression, mania, and schizophrenia. If it appears that spirits might be involved in any of these, theories must be developed to explain how they are involved, and what is the balance between the natural and spiritual elements of these conditions. This is because no spirit-caused condition is one-hundred percent spiritual, not even possession; all spirits are limited to working through the physiology and psychology of the subject.

CHAPTER 14: The Mind, Drugs, and Spirits (32 pages) If spirits may be involved in epilepsy, the neuroses, and the psychoses, why can some of these conditions be treated (though not cured) by drugs? And why, conversely, do other drugs seem to promote the activity of spirits, such as the psychedelic and other mind-altering drugs? Most Third World religions use drugs and asceticism to produce spiritual experiences, as a means of putting their devotees into contact with their "gods." So is there a connection between the mind, drugs, and spirits?

CHAPTER 15: Reply to Dr. Reddin (24 pages) It is not enough to answer various objections to the idea that a Christian can have an unclean spirit; there are also entire books written against this idea. These objecting works come from all directions, from the fundamentalists, from the liberals, and from the non-Christian psychiatrists. The fundamentalist viewpoint is represented in a book by Dr. Opal Reddin and nine of her colleagues at Central Bible College, Springfield, Missouri. Their book is called, Power Encounter: A Pentecostal Perspective.

Though their credentials are impeccable, the arguments of these theologians are extremely weak. The passages they cite to "prove" that a Christian cannot have an unclean spirit have little or nothing to do with internal demonic bondages. For instance, they repeatedly refer to Matthew 6:24, the passage that says no man can serve two masters, as one such "proof." But what does this have to do with demonology? Why should anyone think that those who are harassed by unclean spirits are "serving" the devil? This is a dangerous attitude, the same one that lead to the prosecution of the possessed during the witch hunts of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. At that time the possessed were identified with witches, which resulted in their being imprisoned, tortured and executed along with witches! By citing such passages as Matthew 6:24, these theologians demonstrate that they are out of contact with the realities of this subject.

Dr. Reddin and her colleagues further criticize those who have made demonology their life-long study, but their lack of understanding demonstrates their failure to invest any real amount of time and energy into studying this matter. Hence, their thought and arguments are fraught with weakness.

CHAPTER 16: Reply to Dr. Corts (28 pages) Dr. Juan Corts, a liberal, has produced a similar book entitled, The Case Against Possessions and Exorcisms: A Historical, Biblical, and Psychological Analysis of Demons, Devils, and Demoniacs. His credentials are impressive: the holder of a masters degree in philosophy, a doctorate in theology, and a Ph.D in clinical psychology, and having been both a student and a professor at Harvard. However, his errors in the use of New Testament Greek and in his interpretation of scripture are easily exposed. For instance, he claims that a "demon" is not a true substantive, not a real "thing," but merely an impersonal "force" or "influence." He supports this claim by stating that in the Greek the word "demon" is never preceded by the definite article "the." But the fact is, out of a total of fifty-five listings for this word in the New Testament, the definite article precedes it in thirty-one of these cases (which are listed), which is 56% of the total. This is a far cry from "never."

CHAPTER 17: Reply to Dr. Sargant (15 pages) The psychological viewpoint is represented by Dr. William Sargant in two of his books: Battle for the Mind, and The Mind Possessed: A Psychology of Possession, Mysticism, and Faith Healing. His books are interesting, and his contribution to the treatment of the soldiers who suffered nervous breakdowns during World War II was significant. However, when he tries his hand in the field of religion, he is obviously unqualified. He holds such beliefs as, the Christian conversion process is the result of a nervous breakdown, the apostle Paul suffered trance-like hysterical fits of ecstasy when he spoke in tongues, and exorcism is equivalent to his drug-excitation treatment for hysteria. His lack of understanding of the religious domain and of the spiritual realities essentially hamstrings the effect of his argument.

About the Author
Dr. Haider Warraich graduated from medical school in Pakistan in 2009. He did his residency in internal medicine at Harvard Medical School’s Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, one of the main teaching hospitals of Harvard Medical School. He is currently a fellow in cardiology at Duke University Medical Center. His medical and Op Ed pieces have appeared in many media outlets including the New York Times, The Atlantic, the Wall Street Journal,Slate, and the LA Times among others.

A comprehensive treatise on an important and timely subject.

This is an incredibly well-researched, well-written, and eminently readable book about the difficult topics of death, medicine, and how medicine has changed death and dying. I found Dr. Warraich's explanation of cellular death very interesting, along with information about how humanity has handled death throughout history, up to the present day. He talks extensively about the dilemmas surrounding extending the lives of patients when there is any doubt about the wishes of the patient or in cases in which the patient is terminally ill and prolonging life may not be in the patient's best interest. Since most of us have known people who have died after prolonged illnesses, will come to know people who will go through this, or may even endure this ourselves, there is a great deal of relevant information in this book. The book also makes a good argument for putting our own wishes in writing so that the decisions about the kind of death we would wish for ourselves is in our control rather than under the control of medical staff who do not know us at all except as a patient in the hospital. I recommend this book to everyone.

very good

I used to be a huge fan of Diana Palmer until all of her books started sounding the same. Maybe she should stop putting out so many and go for quality and different scenarios than quantity.That said, this is one of her books I still have and reread occassionally. Hunter is a half-breed indian who thinks that Jennifer is too much a "cover girl". She is in fact a top geologist whose looks have actually hindered her. She is in a male dominated field, working with Hunter (a chief of security) trying to uncover an ore that rebel countries are also looking to find and sparks fly. I recommend this DP work. Both of these characters were briefly mentioned in "His Girl Friday" or "Hoodwinked". I can't remember which.

Sweet Sparring Romance

FINAL DECISION: This is a light novel with a sparring romance between the hero and heroine. A cross-cultural romance with characters who are good people and compassionate, I enjoyed their interplay and the lack of cruel behavior by the hero.

THE STORY: Jennifer Marist is a blond geologist who works in a male field and has been separated from most men as a result. She is twenty-seven but hasn't had a serious relationship because of her career. Phillip Hunter is chief of security for Ritter Oil and is tasked with secret operations. When Jennifer's work requires her to spend a week in the desert, Hunter is sent along to protect her. Hunter is determined to not succumb to his attraction to Jennifer. As a Native American, he has sworn never to get involved with a white woman again. So his predicament is this -- keep Jennifer at a distance while protecting her.

OPINION: I really liked the connection between Hunter and Jennifer. This book was originally published as a category romance and thus is short and had restrictions on the length and content at the time it was written. Despite this, however, the sweet romance between Hunter and Jennifer shines through. I especially like how the two characters spar with one another and how Hunter has made a habit of rescuing Jennifer from the trouble she gets into. Hunter is one of the sweet Palmer heroes...compassionate and gentle rather than rude and angry.

WORTH MENTIONING: At times Palmer heroes are exceptionally cruel to the heroines because they either misunderstand the motivations of the heroine or don't appreciate her innocence. Hunter doesn't want to get involved with Jennifer, but he is much kinder toward her than might be expected in a Palmer book.

CONNECTED BOOKS: HUNTER is connected with HIS GIRL FRIDAY but can be read as a standalone.

Can't put down!

This is one of my all time favorite books!It was originally published back in the 90's and I read it when it was newly published. Now I found it again, thanks to Amazon.com. I'll reread it often. Hunter is the ideal hero. An alpha male before alphas were popular. Get this book, you will not regret it.

I wrote this book because I had to. For more than 10 years, I’ve been stuffing my head so full of the design, programming, management, and content of information systems that I have to let some out before I can learn anymore.

Seriously, from the first time I matched a printed user’s guide against the capabilities of Windows 3.0 Help, to the last time I sat with a dot-com client and discussed the impact of massive content management on the architecture of an e-commerce site, I have been living the transition from print to the computer screen.

I've seen a ton of technologies and a slew of systems. I've learned enough to know that there is a lot to discuss and figure out. My thinking on what I have experienced has reached some sort of embryonic maturity and is ready to hatch, so here it comes!

* To do e-business, you need the organization and focus that a content management system provides.

* To be useful on the Web and beyond, information must be designed for reuse and must be packaged so that it can be located and automatically organized into targeted publications.

* Content is the information and interactivity that organizations must harness in order to deliver value to their customers.

* Content management systems (CMS) collect, manage, and publish this information and interactivity.

* A CMS is not a CD-ROM that you install, start, and forget about. Rather, it is an ongoing process of knowing your information and your audiences and how to match the two together in a set of publications.

This book attempts to lay a comprehensive foundation under these concepts and create a solid methodology for the practice of content management and, by implication, e-business.

Buy it!

This is an excellent book. If you have anything to do with managing digital media, in particular if you are facing the enormous demands of managing content for a large web site, then this book will prove very valuable. I think the cover, and size of book, makes it appear a little too technical but I actually it is Project Managers, Producers, Marketing Managers, Editorial and Content teams, Analysts and the like who will benefit most.
It's certainly not a dummies guide and it's not the strategic musings of the latest e-guru: it is practical, applicable, sensible, informative, authoritative, realistic and, despite the 900+ pages, eminently readable. A great balance of process and practice. And, as you would expect, well organised and cross-referenced.
Content management is a BIG topic and if you haven't come up against it yet, you will. Without it, all those buzz words like `eCRM', `community' and `personalisation' just aren't possible. Content management addresses big, and growing, problems as well as opening up exciting new opportunities for multi-platform, personalised publishing. This big book is the best thing I've yet read to help you on your way.

The most complete and authoritative reference book about CMS

As a Project Manager with a mandate to come up with a Content Management System for my organization, over the course of the past three months I've found the CMS Bible by Boiko simply essential, as most of the other 'bible' tech books I've read have been. He provides a very robust framework that you can follow in your project, if you have the time to read through its almost 1000 pages.
First, he delves into a very thorough discussion about the more 'phylosophical' topics of content (what it is, what is data, what is metadata, etc.) and content management at large. If you haven't gotten your feet wet with a CMS project before, the first 10 chapters (175 pages) will get you soaked with the type of dilemmas you are bound to face when you work on a CMS.
Then, he provides what could be considered a "recipe" to put together a CMS successfully (though no two CMS projects are ever alike, but a lot of them have similar characteristics). There are a number of chapters and sections specifically devoted to the steps required to ensure a successful outsourcing of the project, but the framework he provides is not limited to it: you can perfectly apply it to an in-house implementation. Also, he tends to paint the largest possible picture (with all staff possible, etc.) but you can very easily scale it down to the size and shape of your organization.
In general, his framework goes back once and again to the concept of the "Wheel of Content Management" where he connects the spikes that allow the 'wheel' to move: goals and requirements, audiences, publications, authors, acquisition sources, workflow and staff and access structures, all revolving around the central content component classes with metadata as the outside of the wheel, serving as a container for it all.
He doesn't wrap up the book without devoting enough space to XML and its close cousin, the DTD. He even provides a small VB app to convert Word content to XML, and that's still "only" on page 788. If you haven't noticed by now, this book is MASSIVE, and if there's any issue with it, that would be it: the fact that you will need to devote a long time to processing it. But all in all, the book with its companion web site is an invaluable tool for all Project Managers who have in their hands the responsibility of giving birth to a CMS for their organizations.

Content management is a major task in my job - we integrate 2 ERP systems, web servers, 2 document management systems.... and there are plenty of places we could improve.
This book was a godsend. Almost every page has something that's relevant. Almost every page, I find myself thinking "I know exactly what you mean", or "Hey, we could really use that idea".
But despite all the useful information, it remains very generalised and extremely readable. Unlike many books of this kind, it doesn't dwell on specific products (or even programming languages) that will likely be out of date in twelve months. The focus is very much on concepts and best practices that will stand the reader in good stead for a long time.
I would go so far as to say this is the most helpful IT book I have bought in the past 12 months. Highly recommended.
