Challenging and Fun!

This is an exceptionally handy book to have if you are a classroom teacher or a homeschooling parent. I would recommend it without hesitation. It goes from upper elementary through middle school and on to high school without skipping a beat. This is a little book but packed with over 200 puzzles. Wonderful for homeschooling multiple ages. Waldorf-friendly but in no way restricted to a Waldorf classroom, this book can be used by anyone. And today when the baby was crying and I had to go nurse him but I was supposed to meet with my 8th grader for Math Practice, I could give her a puzzle from this book and know that it's challenging and interesting and NOT busy work. It respects the child, which is ultimately what I look for in a teaching resource.

What a GREAT resource

If you want to make math interesting to students (they say 4th through High School - it is a great resource for anyone wanting to make math more interesting) this book is a great resource.
This book has (all segmented by grade) puzzles, games, math magic tricks, classroom activities (and of course solutions for the over 200 puzzles, games etc.
Why this book? The authors have collected very good puzzles for each grade, with the intent to provide students with the experience of a mathematical thrill. NOT just memorizing rote procedures.
Want to bring your math classes alive? sprinkle in some of these teasers... Having watched how author Jamie York creates stories and challenges for his students, it makes me wish I had teachers as interesting and engaging as this.
Bust the myths of "math is hard" and "Math is not interesting" with the puzzles in this book!!

Problem-solving vs Solving Problems

I am very intrigued by Jamie's discussion of problem-solving vs solving problems as noted in the Introduction. The development of mathematical thinking versus mere proficiency in computation is a powerful and useful distinction. Of course, math requires procedural mastery as well, and that means a lot of practice. But I'm grateful that a math puzzle book has been written from the viewpoint of encouraging the development of mathematical thinking versus merely running through math procedures.
