HP Lovecraft: The Mysterious Man Behind the Darkness, by Charlotte Montague

H.P. Lovecraft was virtually unknown during his lifetime and only published his stories in pulp magazines such as Weird Tales and Astounding Stories. He died a recluse in poverty and obscurity, aged just 46. Consumed with self-doubt, despair and monstrous inner demons, his nightmares inhabit every page of his writing. H.P. Lovecraft and the universe he created are part of an astonishing cultural phenomenon. Lovecraft's reputation has been revived to the point of reverence and he now occupies a position of great respect within American literature.

He is now widely regarded as one of the most significant horror fiction writers of the twentieth century. Dark forbidden knowledge is always a central theme in Lovecraft's stories with protagonists who dare to discover hidden secrets which, in the end, completely destroy them. His dark grotesque creations have inspired authors such as Stephen King and Clive Barker, as well as film directors John Carpenter, Sturart Gordon and Roger Corman.

Eighty years after his death, Charlotte Montague has written an intriguing biography of the enigmatic author and in the process uncovers the mystery of the strange man behind the darkness--H.P. Lovecraft--the master of modern horror fiction. This book dares you to explore the hidden secrets of your own imagination through the life of a man whose writing was inspired by nightmares.

About the Author

Charlotte Montague is a freelance writer who specializes in history. Her father was a naval officer, and as a child, she travelled the world with her family. After gaining an M.A. degree in History from Sussex University, she began writing on a variety of subjects including ethnic cultures, travel, and music. Since then, she has continued to write on costumes, on flags, on knots, on body adornment, on sea shanties, and many other topics. More recently, she developed an interest in the history of crime at sea, not only in Europe but further afield. Her current research has taken her to many parts of the globe, including Africa and the Far East, particularly the islands of the South Pacific. She travels for most of the year, but returns frequently to her home, a remote eighteenth-century cottage close to a famous smuggler's cove on the Cornish coast.

The Popular Biography of Lovecraft You Deserve
By Ancient History
There have been a number of attempts to present H. P. Lovecraft and his legacy to a popular audience. While nothing could hold a candle to S. T. Joshi's massive I Am Providence: The Life and Times of H. P. Lovecraft (Two Volumes) in terms of detail, nothing else holds a candle to Montague's beautiful, detailed, heavily illustrated and refreshing accurate biography of Lovecraft. While Paul Roland's The Curious Case of H. P. Lovecraft is a mishmash of errors, Montague manages to not just keep to the facts, but presents them in a lively and pithy manner, quoting directly from Lovecraft's own letters. Considerable focus is given to Lovecraft's stories, with nearly each piece of fiction given its own sidebar at some point.

The whole book somewhat resembles Gothic Dream's Necronomicon (Gothic Dreams) and Cthulhu: Dark Fantasy, Horror & Supernatural Movies (Gothic Dreams) in presentation: an oversize hardback with glossy pages, not a mass-market paperback. Artwork is copious, including many photographs of Lovecraft, his friends and family, as well as evocative artwork culled from almost everything remotely connected to HPL, from Sidney Syme's illustrations for Lord Dunsany to Weird Tales illustrations by Hannes Bok. It also looks, briefly, at Lovecraft's posthumous publishing at Weird Tales and Arkham House, the continuation of his Mythos by other authors, and the adaptation of his works in film.

Is it perfect? No. The most regrettable section is a paragraph on page 26 which repeats the relatively unfounded assertion that Lovecraft might have had Asperger's (and Montague's "some sources" is almost certainly Lovecraft's Syndrome: An Asperger's Appraisal of the Writer's Life ). You're still better off getting a copy of The Lurker in the Lobby: The Guide to Lovecraftian Cinema if you want a more in-depth look at Lovecraftian cinema. But for a popular biography of Lovecraft, I can't name a better one on the market, and none are so attractive, except perhaps H. P. Lovecraft: Nightmare Countries (The Master of Cosmic Horror). Scholars will continue to use Joshi's I AM PROVIDENCE as their standard reference, but if you're just a fan of Lovecraft and want to learn more, this is a very solid and attractive book.

This book is a carefully research biography and is a treasure trove of Lovecraft photos and macabre illustrations.

H.P. Lovecraft - The Mysterious Man Behind The Darkness by Charlotte Montague (0690 - Biography - March 27, 2016)

As a long time admirer of Lovecraft's stories I immediately purchased this title when I saw it in the remainder stacks at the local Barnes and Noble. I was very familiar with HPL's life story and anticipated from a quick look at this book it would expand my knowledge of this eccentrically talented individual.

I was not disappointed - in fact this volume exceeded my expectations in many ways. First thing first is the format. This oversized hard bound volume - 7.5 x 10.5 inches - on heavy glossy stock clearly displayed many astonishing original illustrations from HPL's magazine stories and many extraordinary black and white photographs of HPL, his friends, family and wife. Many of these photographs were unknown to this reader.

In two columns per page format the author details Lovecraft's biography. Combining personal details of his family, friendships and publishing history the story of this troubled writer is uncritically presented. One aspect of this book I particularly liked was the extensive sidebar notations whenever a story title is first mentioned. Many of these sidebars include interior story illustrations from Weird Tales magazine or the actual color cover where the story was first published.

This book is a carefully research biography and is a treasure trove of Lovecraft photos and macabre illustrations. Curious readers and dedicated admires of HPL will, I believe, find this a worth addition to their library.

Great Book But Nothing New
By The Ghost
Great book. Not much in the way of new information (what's left to be said about HPL at this point, anyway?), but tons of great pictures, old magazine covers, etc. Nice little blurbs about various subjects and other authors. Well worth it for anyone interested in HPL and the Cthulhu Mythos.
